SIGN OF THE CROSS OPENING PRAYER • Option 1. Use Opening Prayer from the Sunday Liturgy. • Option 2. Prayer of Pope Clement XI Lord, I believe in you: increase my faith. I trust in you: strengthen my trust. I love you: let me love you more and more. I am sorry for my sins: deepen my sorrow. I worship you as my first beginning. I long for you as my last end. I praise you as my constant helper. And I call you as my loving protector. I want to do what you ask of me: In the way you ask, for as long as you ask, because you ask it. Let me love you Lord as my God. And see myself as I really am: a pilgrim in this world. A Christian called to respect and love all those lives I touch. Note to catechist: There is more material than you can use in a one hour session. Select and arrange accordingly. Use questions and material that is best suited for your particular group. DOCTRINAL ISSUE IS NAMED. • Catholic teaching [doctrinal issue] flowing from the Liturgy of the Word is named and the reason for its choice is given. LITURGICAL CONTEXT Catechist presents the connection between the liturgy just celebrated and the doctrinal issue of the NICENE CREED. Catechist reads the CONNECTING STATEMENT that connects the liturgy with this doctrinal issue. LITURGICAL CONTEXT What Jesus accomplished as a result of his death and resurrection is found in the prayers we pray at Mass—it is found particularly in the Nicene Creed, the Lord’s Prayer and various other prayers. Today we are going to break open the Nicene Creed. This profession of faith is a prayer you will say for the rest of your life. It summarizes the most important things we believe about Jesus the Christ, as well as other important doctrines we believe. HUMAN EXPERIENCE Catechist invites participants to take a panoramic view of their own lives—to remember significant events and call them forward. Allow five to seven minutes for the exercise and discuss for about five minutes. Have you ever belonged to a group that had a charter, vision statement, etc.? Why do groups formulate such statements? What do they accomplish? What is their purpose? Wider group discussion. Most religions require their members to agree to some profession of faith—a creed—that which is the foundation of their faith. The NICENE CREED is that profession of faith for us and for most baptized Christians. Today we are going to break open its riches. Let us pray the entire prayer and then we will break it apart. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. © Mary Birmingham 2010. All rights reserved.
