B. KEEPER’S DIARY<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> the <strong>zoos</strong> <strong>in</strong> India ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a Keeper‟s diary <strong>in</strong> which the keeper‟s note<br />

down the activities <strong>of</strong> the animal like diet change, quantity <strong>of</strong> leftover feed, medical<br />

observation (treatment), behavioral observation (estrus, mat<strong>in</strong>g, groom<strong>in</strong>g etc),<br />

enrichment, birth, hatch<strong>in</strong>g, weigh<strong>in</strong>g, death, shift<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> animal to another enclosure<br />

with<strong>in</strong> the zoo, mark<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> animals, export and import <strong>of</strong> the animals.<br />

Each animal section/ beat should ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a ledger with a pr<strong>in</strong>ted standard format<br />

for keeper‟s daily report. One Beat/ Section may have several enclosures hous<strong>in</strong>g several<br />

species <strong>of</strong> animals. For e.g. <strong>in</strong> Darjeel<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Zoo</strong> there are 16 hold<strong>in</strong>gs/ enclosures <strong>in</strong> Beat 1,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 2 aviaries and an aquarium. This Beat has 8 species <strong>of</strong> pheasants and 4 species<br />

<strong>of</strong> lesser carnivores, 2 keepers are <strong>in</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> this Beat. One ledger <strong>of</strong> keeper‟s diary is<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed by them.<br />

In this way each section <strong>in</strong> a zoo can ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> one keeper‟s diary. The ledger‟s<br />

first page should clarify the keeper about what should be recorded <strong>in</strong> the Keeper‟s Diary.<br />

The first page along with the CZA‟s format for Keepre‟s Dairy which is reproduced<br />

below should be used for ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g keeper‟s diary.<br />
