al., 2002). In our opinion, the high micronuclei<br />
frequency observed in experimental sample was<br />
induced either by the lagging <strong>of</strong> whole chromosomes<br />
or the immobility <strong>of</strong> large acentric fragments. The<br />
formation <strong>of</strong> acentric fragments resulted from<br />
different chromosome aberrations, <strong>and</strong> the lagging <strong>of</strong><br />
chromosomes was caused by disturbances in the<br />
mitotic spindle or the centromere. We suggest that the<br />
anaphase- <strong>and</strong> telophase bridges established, as well<br />
as the chromosome fragments resulted from different<br />
types <strong>of</strong> chromosome aberrations, associated with a<br />
loss <strong>of</strong> genetic material. Our suggestion corroborated<br />
the data reported by Hoga et al. (1991), who<br />
considered the anaphase bridges as obtained from<br />
structural changes <strong>of</strong> deficiency- <strong>and</strong> translocation<br />
type, some <strong>of</strong> them surviving to late telophase,<br />
indicative <strong>of</strong> their stability. The increased frequency <strong>of</strong><br />
chromosome mutations established by us in sample<br />
No2, agreed with the data reported by Bojadzhiev et<br />
al. (1990), who suggested that lead had embryotoxic<br />
<strong>and</strong> gonadotoxic effects.<br />
A general conclusion is made that the established<br />
water pollution in the region <strong>of</strong> the town <strong>of</strong><br />
Panagjurishte <strong>and</strong> its genotoxic effects are a potential<br />
threat to human health. This suggestion supports the<br />
opinion <strong>of</strong> Ananoshtev et al. (2001) who thought that<br />
the increased cancer rate in the studied region was<br />
associated with the increased contents <strong>of</strong> lead,<br />
cyanides, arsenic, <strong>and</strong> cadmium in samples <strong>of</strong> tap<br />
water <strong>and</strong> open water sources in the region.<br />
