<strong>Lighting</strong> promoting safety and creating a sense <strong>of</strong> pleasantness<br />

In the free responses, participants<br />

referred to pleasant lighting using words<br />

like beautiful, relaxing, good, even, s<strong>of</strong>t,<br />

atmospheric, and tender. They referred to<br />

unpleasant lighting as hard, bleak, cold,<br />

unnatural, even, uneven, dark and too<br />

bright. In terms <strong>of</strong> the lighting attributes,<br />

the participants mentioned dark<br />

surroundings and uneven pathway lighting<br />

most <strong>of</strong>ten in relation to the perceived<br />

safety <strong>of</strong> an area A (dark areas were<br />

mentioned 11 times and safety concerns 6<br />

times). In other areas, they expressed hardly<br />

any ideas concerning perceived safety. In<br />

areas C and E 11 participants commented<br />

the lighting as too bright whereas in area D<br />

three participants considered the lighting as<br />

too dim.<br />

5. Discussion<br />

This study explored the relationship<br />

between five lighting attributes (perceived<br />

colour quality, evenness, extensiveness,<br />

brightness, and glare) and perceived safety<br />

and pleasantness in five suburban locations.<br />

The results indicate that the spectral<br />

distribution, ‘the colour <strong>of</strong> the light makes<br />

the environment pleasant’, is the most<br />

significant attribute in promoting both<br />

perceived safety and a pleasant lighting<br />

environment.<br />

The relation between pathway brightness<br />

and perceived safety was significant in only<br />

one area (D), where the average luminance<br />

on the pavement was 0.28 cd/m 2 . We also<br />

evaluated this area in a direction in which<br />
