There and then I met my future friends,<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essors or pr<strong>of</strong>essionals working in<br />

lighting field, people supporting our further<br />

steps to enhance lighting knowledge and to<br />

uphold Romanian lighting development.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor SCHANDA assisted all our<br />

efforts to promote ILUMINAT conferences<br />

2001-2009 and INGINERIA ILUMINATULUI<br />

- <strong>Journal</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lighting</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong> - (since<br />

2001), with lectures and technical papers.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Janos SCHANDA graduated<br />

in physics at the Loránd Eötvös University<br />

in Budapest (1955). His PhD thesis dealt<br />

with the “Spectroradiometric Investigation<br />

<strong>of</strong> Electro-luminescence”. After graduation<br />

he worked for three years at the Hungarian<br />

Office for Measures, then he joined the<br />

Research Institute for Technical Physics <strong>of</strong><br />

the Hungarian Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences, where<br />

he worked as scientific co-worker, later as<br />

head <strong>of</strong> the Department for Optics and<br />

Electronics. He retired from the Institute as<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Optics and<br />

Electronics and joined the University <strong>of</strong><br />

Veszprém (now University <strong>of</strong> Pannonia) as<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> informatics. He headed there<br />

the Department <strong>of</strong> Image Processing and<br />

Neurocomputing. Since retirement, he is<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Emeritus and heads at present the<br />

“Virtual Environment and Imaging<br />

Technologies Laboratory”.<br />

He worked for the International<br />

Commission on Illumination (CIE) as its<br />

General Secretary and later technical<br />

manager - the nineteen eighties and<br />

nineteen nineties. He functioned also in a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> honorary positions <strong>of</strong> the CIE.<br />

Between July 2007 and 2011 he served as<br />

the Vice President Technical <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Commission, chaired and chairs several<br />

Technical Committees, among others<br />

dealing with fundamentals <strong>of</strong> photometry,<br />

colorimetry and colour rendering.<br />

He is author <strong>of</strong> over 600 technical papers<br />

and conference lectures.<br />

Many happy returns to you, Janos, and a<br />

long and fruitful life!<br />
