viii Series 3000 Application Programmer’s Guide using the functions in these libraries, the programmer has C language access to the features of the Series 3000 terminals necessary to integrate the terminal into the target application. These central features include bar code scanning and communications, including Spectrum One ® radio communications. Additional libraries allow for further enhancements, such as graphics display capabilities and custom keyboard definitions. In addition to the libraries, this reference includes descriptions of a number of utilities also included in the ADK. Some utilities are special purpose programs that can be included in the terminal environment, usually running as TSRs (Terminate and Stay Resident programs). Others are programming tools necessary to build files or programs to run on the Series 3000 terminal. It also describes a modem command set that includes commands supported by the IM3, IM4, IM5, IM6 and IM7 internal modems. Series 3000 Application Developer’s Library This library routines described in this reference facilitate the development of 'C' programs to execute on the Symbol Technologies Series 3000 terminals. These routines are supplied as a supplement to ADK libraries and to Microsoft 'C' libraries and make calls to those libraries. The functions supplied cover many aspects of typical hand-held computer applications, including file data management, keyboard entry, scanning, screen output, sound, data manipulation, communications, program update and memory status. Series 3000 System Software Manual This reference manual provides detailed information on low level utilities that may be required for programming Series 3000 terminals at system level. It will be useful to the application programmer or software engineer who, while writing applications for Series 3000 terminals, must use lowlevel function calls to: - develop or modify higher level structures - access special features of the Series 3000 terminal that are available only through these low level functions
Chapter Descriptions About This Manual The following brief chapter descriptions will help you focus on your area of interest: Chapter 1, Installing the ADK, describes the installation procedure for the ADK, system requirements, and set-up options. Chapter 2, Programming a Series 3000 Terminal, introduces the processes involved in writing a C program for a Series 3000 terminal. It deals primarily with the following three processes: 1.Writing and compiling an application program 2.Building and downloading an operating environment into the terminal NVM (Non-Volatile Memory) 3.Downloading the program to the terminal Chapter 3, Terminal Environment, lists all of the models of Series 3000 hand-held computers and describes the features associated with and the options available on each model. Chapter 4, NVM Configuration, describes different configuration options available on Series 3000 terminals. Chapter 5, Terminal Initialization, describes the Terminal Initialization Tool (BLDINIT.EXE), which builds the INIT.EXE initialization program for Series 3000 terminals. Chapter 6, Managing Files, focuses primarily on Symbol’s UBASIC File Management Resource for Series 3000 terminals. This file manager provides high level file storage and access methods for fast and efficient file management. (See also the chapter on the UBASIC Record Manager in the Series 3000 Application Programmer’s Reference Manual, which is supplied with the ADK.) Chapter 7, Managing Memory, describes a number of methods for managing how your applications use memory. It also some ways of solving memory limitations. ix
