Contribution to Exist<strong>in</strong>g Literature<br />

Both academic and <strong>in</strong>dustry leaders stand to ga<strong>in</strong> advantages by better<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>role</strong> <strong>sourc<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>agents</strong> play <strong>in</strong> facilitat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>apparel</strong> production. Many <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g literary works extensively discuss <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual stages that occur throughout<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>supply</strong> cha<strong>in</strong>. For example, Rivoli (2005), a well-established leader <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong><br />

economics, describes <strong>the</strong> very complex life <strong>of</strong> a t-shirt <strong>in</strong> her book, The Travels <strong>of</strong> a T-<br />

shirt <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Global Economy. From cotton farms <strong>in</strong> Texas to manufactur<strong>in</strong>g facilities <strong>in</strong><br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>a, retail stores <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States to mitumba trade <strong>in</strong> Africa, Rivoli takes a rivet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

look at how complex <strong>the</strong> <strong>apparel</strong> <strong>supply</strong> cha<strong>in</strong> is <strong>in</strong> today’s <strong>global</strong> economy. However, as<br />

she also noted, bridg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> gaps <strong>of</strong> culture and location between <strong>the</strong> United States, Ch<strong>in</strong>a<br />

and Africa is complex and <strong>in</strong>tertw<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> a web <strong>of</strong> policies and regulations (Rivoli, 2005).<br />

Beyond <strong>the</strong> academic literature, a great deal <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation targeted to bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals exists, with a specific focus on success <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

environments. One well-known <strong>in</strong>ternational trade attorney, Tom Travis, authored a<br />

book <strong>in</strong> 2007 on Do<strong>in</strong>g Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Anywhere: The Essential Guide to Go<strong>in</strong>g Global.<br />

With<strong>in</strong> his book, Travis provides several pieces <strong>of</strong> advice to <strong>in</strong>dustry pr<strong>of</strong>essionals on<br />

achiev<strong>in</strong>g success, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g mak<strong>in</strong>g ethical decisions and appropriate cultural exchanges<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess meet<strong>in</strong>gs. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, Travis specifically targets <strong>in</strong>dividuals mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong>fshore production decisions and how <strong>the</strong>y can operate best <strong>in</strong> a <strong>global</strong> marketplace.<br />

Lack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> literature, however, are <strong>the</strong> details <strong>of</strong> how <strong>sourc<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>agents</strong> can assist <strong>in</strong><br />

help<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>of</strong>essionals achieve success or at least equip pr<strong>of</strong>essionals with <strong>the</strong> tools<br />

necessary to make better <strong>sourc<strong>in</strong>g</strong> decisions. With<strong>in</strong> this study, <strong>the</strong> <strong>role</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>sourc<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
