included in <strong>the</strong> syn<strong>the</strong>sis mixture. The resulting zeolite encapsulates <strong>the</strong> transition metal<br />

complex in its voids. The excess lig<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> uncomplexed metal ions are major<br />

disadvantages <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first two methods. In order to avoid uncomplexed metal ions <strong>and</strong><br />

excess lig<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> metal complexes are encapsulated during zeolite crystallization.<br />

For oxidation <strong>of</strong> para-xylene, salen complexes <strong>of</strong> copper <strong>and</strong> manganese,<br />

encapsulated in <strong>the</strong> cavities <strong>of</strong> zeolite NaX have been investigated as catalysts for <strong>the</strong><br />

aerobic oxidation <strong>of</strong> para-xylene. Significant conversion levels (up to 50-60%) were<br />

attained (Ch<strong>and</strong>ra et al. 1999).<br />
