Early 1900’s: Rapid intensification
The early 1900’s signal a period of rapid
local intensification, with the
construction of the wider terraced street
forms, the expansion of the railway
cutting to accommodate more tracks,
and the rapid decline of local farmland.
The twin armatures of North Street and
East Street now appear to be of equal
importance, and the church still holds it
local position of significance.
Post War to present day: Severance
The post war period signals both the
demolition of much of the Victorian
street fabric in favour of modernist
estates, and the implementation of
1960’s highway design theory.
With this demolition, North Street
becomes an urban backwater, with
East Street taking the role as the local
centre, and the church losing its local
significance in location terms. The
railway has expanded still further to its
current capacity.
