The old prospector with his<br />
pick and pan and burro is; still<br />
roaming <strong>the</strong> deseit hills. But<br />
<strong>the</strong>re is ano<strong>the</strong>r kind <strong>of</strong> prospector<br />
abroad in <strong>the</strong> land—a scientific<br />
fellow who goes out in <strong>the</strong><br />
dark <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> night with a mysterious<br />
contraption that identifies<br />
certain types <strong>of</strong> rock by <strong>the</strong><br />
way <strong>the</strong>y glow when a magic<br />
ray <strong>of</strong> light is turned on Ihem.<br />
Here is <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong> a great mineral<br />
discovery — made possible<br />
by one <strong>of</strong> science's most modern<br />
achievements — <strong>the</strong> ultra-violet<br />

Night Prospector<br />
(y ULY 22, 1937, was a typically hot<br />
/ summer day on <strong>the</strong> desert west <strong>of</strong><br />
,y Adelanto, California. A dusty<br />
:oupe strained through heavy sand on<br />
he seldom-used road.<br />
"Mirage Valley is right!" thought Oli-<br />
.er Adams as he forced his boiling car<br />
on toward low 1 Shadow mountain, shimmering<br />
in <strong>the</strong> midday heat a few miles<br />
ahead.<br />
Suddenly <strong>the</strong> tires sank into deep sand.<br />
Adams tried to dig out, but it was useless.<br />
The sun beat down pitilessly upon<br />
him. His water was low.<br />
