scrawled <strong>the</strong>se three words in <strong>the</strong> desert<br />
sand before he died <strong>of</strong> hunger and thirst<br />
in <strong>the</strong> barren Gila mountains 16 miles<br />
sou<strong>the</strong>ast <strong>of</strong> Yuma. A searching party in<br />
May found Jude's body, nearby an empty<br />
canteen, and <strong>the</strong> message. The prospector's<br />
automobile, tires flat, stood a short distance<br />
away.<br />
Window Rock . . .<br />
Pifion nut harvest in Arizona and New<br />
Mexico, in good years worth $1,000,000,<br />
will be poor this year, according to reports<br />
here. Because <strong>the</strong> pifion is important source<br />
<strong>of</strong> cash for <strong>the</strong> Navajo, <strong>the</strong> Indian income<br />
is hit hard when <strong>the</strong> crop fails. Annual<br />
expedition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indians to <strong>the</strong> hills to<br />
ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> nuts is a big event every fall before<br />
snow flies in <strong>the</strong> high country.<br />
Pearce . . .<br />
Basal part <strong>of</strong> a huge mammoth's tusk was<br />
found on <strong>the</strong> eastern slope <strong>of</strong> Dragoon<br />
mountains in <strong>the</strong> Sulphur springs valley.<br />
Finder was rancher Jack Busenbark. Identification<br />
was made by Dr. Emil Haury, head<br />
<strong>of</strong> Arizona university anthropology department.<br />
Haury expects to search in <strong>the</strong> locality<br />
for more remains, hopes to find <strong>the</strong>re also<br />
evidence <strong>of</strong> human life during <strong>the</strong> remote<br />
age in which <strong>the</strong> mammoth lived.<br />
Tucson . . .<br />
By a margin <strong>of</strong> one point Lee Echols <strong>of</strong><br />
Nogales won <strong>the</strong> Arizona state pistol championship.<br />
He defeated Norman Adair <strong>of</strong><br />
Yuma, set a new state record when he<br />
scored 297 out <strong>of</strong> a possible 300 in <strong>the</strong><br />
centerfire police match.<br />
Prescott . . .<br />
Preparing for <strong>the</strong> Smoki program August<br />
4, residents <strong>of</strong> this vicinity are rounding up<br />
bullsnakes. Snake hunters responded to an<br />
appeal from members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Smoki clan,<br />
who <strong>of</strong>fer a cash bonus for <strong>the</strong> largest bullsnake<br />
delivered to <strong>the</strong> organization. The<br />
Smoki are community leaders who turn<br />
once every year from <strong>the</strong>ir usual pursuits to<br />
present a ceremonial patterned after <strong>the</strong><br />
ancient Indian snake dances.<br />
Phoenix . . .<br />
Sale <strong>of</strong> six cattle ranches including 102,-<br />
000 acres north <strong>of</strong> Phoenix for approximately<br />
$175,000 is reported. Buyer is Frank N.<br />
Bard, Chicago manufacturer, who will consolidate<br />
<strong>the</strong> properties into one ranch, add<br />
several thousand head <strong>of</strong> cattle to those he<br />
bought with <strong>the</strong> land.<br />
Yuma . . .<br />
Bids were opened June 13 for construction<br />
<strong>of</strong> a power plant on <strong>the</strong> Gila irrigation<br />
project east <strong>of</strong> this city. Water from<br />
<strong>the</strong> Colorado river will be pumped to mesa<br />
lands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gila valley. First unit <strong>of</strong> a<br />
desert area is expected to be irrigated in<br />
1941.<br />
Camp Verde . . .<br />
Workmen building a new road from here<br />
to Montezuma Castle discovered a sealed<br />
Indian cave 100 feet long. Several ollas were<br />
found and one ear <strong>of</strong> corn measuring 9V2<br />
inches in length. Thorough exploration will<br />
be made in search <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r relics.<br />
Grand Canyon . . .<br />
From a light canvas boat Barry Goldwater<br />
<strong>of</strong> Phoenix in May gave a realistic broadcast<br />
by shortwave radio as his frail craft<br />
shot through seven and eight-foot waves<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Colorado river near Phantom ranch<br />
at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> Arizona's Grand Canyon.<br />
His broadcast was interrupted by circumstances<br />
beyond his control when he was<br />
forced to quit talking and bail for his life.<br />
It was a Ripley program. Robert L. described<br />
<strong>the</strong> gorge as capable <strong>of</strong> swallowing 100<br />
Yosemites, a dozen Niagaras and <strong>the</strong> entire<br />
range <strong>of</strong> Swiss Alps, with room remaining<br />
to toss in all <strong>the</strong> armies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
world with <strong>the</strong>ir full equipment. Governor<br />
Jones went on <strong>the</strong> air to say <strong>the</strong> canyon is<br />
"greatest believe-it-or-not wonder <strong>of</strong> all<br />
time."<br />
CALIFORNIA<br />
Twentynine Palms . . .<br />
Appropriation <strong>of</strong> $14,000 for <strong>the</strong> Joshua<br />
Tree national monument will be used in<br />
part for road work and employment <strong>of</strong> a<br />
custodian, according to a letter from Congressman<br />
Harry R. Sheppard, who says<br />
"This, I feel, is <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> development<br />
within <strong>the</strong> park area that will reflect<br />
beneficially in behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> citizens <strong>of</strong><br />
Twentynine Palms and residents in that area<br />
in general."<br />
Palm Springs . . .<br />
Lloyd Mason Smith <strong>of</strong> Ontario, California,<br />
has been appointed director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Palm Springs desert museum for <strong>the</strong> next<br />
season. During <strong>the</strong> past three summers<br />
Smith has been doing field work with Dr.<br />
Edmund C. Jaeger <strong>of</strong> Riverside, author <strong>of</strong><br />
recently published "<strong>Desert</strong> Wild Flowers."<br />
Palm Springs . . .<br />
Members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tribal committee <strong>of</strong> Agua<br />
Caliente Indians have asked for federal<br />
funds to repair fire-damaged Palm canyon.<br />
In a letter to John Collier, commissioner <strong>of</strong><br />
Indian affairs, <strong>the</strong> committee says several<br />
hundred <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> beautiful and valuable palms<br />
in <strong>the</strong> canyon were destroyed or injured.<br />
Necessary work should be done at once, <strong>the</strong><br />
Indians urge.<br />
El Centra . . .<br />
Earthquakes in May caused damage in<br />
Imperial Valley estimated at $2,500,000.<br />
Brawley was hardest hit, El Centro, Holtville<br />
and Calexico not so severely. South<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> border, in Mexico, earth movement<br />
disrupted <strong>the</strong> canal system which delivers<br />
water to <strong>the</strong> rich agricultural district north<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> line. Emergency crews worked night<br />
and day to restore irrigation service in<br />
time to prevent serious crop losses.<br />
Bly<strong>the</strong> . . .<br />
For flood control work on <strong>the</strong> Colorado<br />
river between Boulder dam and Yuma, <strong>the</strong><br />
house <strong>of</strong> representatives has voted $100,-<br />
000. Appropriations for <strong>the</strong> Parker dam project<br />
were raised to $3,500,000 by <strong>the</strong> Senate<br />
and <strong>the</strong> house concurred. This money<br />
will be used to build and equip a hydroelectric<br />
power plant at Parker.<br />
