THE SPIRITUAL LIFE COMMITTEE
The Spiritual Life Committee continues to seek opportunities to help local congregations and groups to
grow deeper in their spiritual lives. Following the presentation at The 2012 Annual Conference of prayer
shawls (lovingly made by people throughout the conference) the prayer emphasis continued for members
of General and Jurisdictional Conferences. Dates were designated to pray for specific members and
concerns.
Resources, both for personal use and with congregational studies, were added to previously given
materials in the Media Center in the areas of spiritual growth, nourishment and contemplative. A large 24
x 24 labyrinth is now available, along with a box of resources, for local churches to request from the
media center. It has been used by youth events, training events and at Annual Conference as well as by
local churches. Training for facilitators is available as is leadership by those trained by Veriditas, the
internationally recognized labyrinth resource.
This committee also provides sacred space throughout Annual Conference each year. A grace-filled
invitation is extended to spend time in the room set aside for early morning communion where
contemplative areas are set up. Taize worship is offered some years in such areas. The labyrinth is also
available for walking and meditation, with materials provided for self-led experiences.
Assistance is provided for planning of retreats or spiritual formation experiences. A listing of available
Spiritual Directors can be found on the website, along with other inspirational and transformational
resources. In the coming year, training in Spiritual Direction will be available as well as support and
fellowship for existing directors. Days Apart and mini-retreat opportunities are planned for both laity and
clergy for times of deeper commitment.
