an all-terrain trail running shoe with specific men’s and women’s designs and 

constructions. Designed for runners training on road and trail, the Xr mission 

is the newest member of salomon’s award-winning Xr family of door-to-trail 

running shoes. 

“the Xr mission is a trail running shoe for people who want to take their training 

seriously and want something lightweight and flexible,” explains Jeff Dill, 

salomon trail running Footwear product Line manager. 

the salomon Xr mission is light and responsive with a patented cushioning 

midsole and oversized (Os) tendon for improved energy return and Os muscle 

for cushioning. new from the ground up, the Xr mission is light and responsive 

with a women-specific version. With a Contagrip outsole, the salomon 

Xr mission naturally adapts to rugged terrain, providing great grip and rebound 

on any surface. 

salomon’s sensiflex technology wraps the forefoot in a soft mesh fabric, 

coated with flexible tpu to adapt to runners’ changing foot shape over the 

course of a workout. Combined with sensifit and Quicklace technology, the 

Xr mission adjusts comfortably to almost any foot. 

the salomon Xr mission is designed separately to tailor to the morphology 

and motion of men’s and women’s feet, the women-specific Xr mission W is 

built on a narrower last, and an asymmetrical fit wraps medially to support 

a higher arch and taller instep -- common among women. the Xr mission W 

hasdeeper flex grooves and more of them than the men’s version to accommodate 

lighter weight and a more rigid foot, also common in women. 

“Developing the Xr mission was very much two different projects,” explains 

Jeff Dill. “Although they look similar, it was critical throughout the process to 

define specific fit and performance characteristics for each gender. We have 

given women a shoe that is designed for them in every way.”

With outstanding cushioning and a simple, flexible approach, the synapse 

encourages you to run Your Hike. 

taking a cue from trail running footwear technology, the synapse is the 

first dedicated hiking shoe designed for natural motion. As runners and 

hikers approach mountain trails as their new sports field, they want 

lightweight footwear that is designed for fluidity on a variety of surfaces 

and terrain, providing cushioning and flexion. 

three key elements set the synapse apart from other hiking shoes 

on the market: Dynamic ride, Dynamic traction and Dynamic rolling. 

Dynamic ride is created by the lightweight and flexible cushioning of 

salomon’s Os (oversized) muscle and the rebound and energy return of 

the Os tendon. 

Dynamic traction is a combination of high-abrasion rubber compound 

and multi-directional lugs, designed to help maintain full contact with 

the ground for improved traction on any surface from scree to rock to 

soft ground and mud. Dynamic rolling is created by a lower heel drop, 

enhancing a natural motion helping to keep feet moving a little faster 

than they otherwise might. 

While the synapse is radical in terms of the midsole, outsole and ride, it 

is still all salomon. its upper is made with welded sensifit and Quicklace, 

providing precise fit, outstanding foothold and easy adjustment. 

“When we started seeing the kinds of people that train in the mountains 

every day, we realized that today’s mountain athletes like to mix it up,” 

explains Anne Deroulede, salomon’s Hiking product Line manager. “From 

bounding down a rough trail to scrambling over rocks, to moving very 

quickly over even terrain, we wanted to create a shoe that excels at all 

of these things, but maintains the salomon DnA of fit and precision. the

sALOmOn’s kiLiAn JOrnet Wins 2011 Western stAtes 100 

Avenging a third place finish in 2010, Jornet is the first non-American Ws100 winner 

AnneCY, FrAnCe, June 25, 2011 

in a hard-fought contest between the trail running world’s top 

competitors today, salomon’s kilian Jornet won the 38th Western 

states endurance run, finishing in front of mike Wolfe and nick 

Clark with the third fastest time in history. 

race results: 

1. kilian Jornet 15:34:25 

2. mike Wolfe 15:38:29 

3. nick Clark 15:50:23 

in a very tight finish, Jornet edged out Wolfe to take the crown as 

the first non-American winner in the history of Ws100. And it was 

kilian’s first trail running victory in the united states. 

today’s temperatures on the course were in the 80s with lingering 

snow pack along much of the trail. 

kilian returned to the Western states endurance run after a 3rd 

place finish in 2010 – his first Ws100 attempt. kilian trained for 

this year’s race by acclimating to the temperature and strategizing 

quicker aid station transitions. 

“it’s the race history which has made me return,” says kilian of the 

Western states 100. “ultra trail was born with this race 38 years 

ago and i can feel that historic atmosphere when i run the Western 

states! it is important for me to know the origin of my sport to 

help me understand it better.” 

the Western states endurance run is a 100-mile ultra-marathon 

race over the trails of California’s sierra nevada mountains. the 

course takes runners over a total of 18,000 feet in elevation gain 

and 22,900 feet of mountain descents. established in 1978, the 

Western states 100 is considered to be the foremost trail running 

event in the us.
