Media Arts & Design Electives<br />

All Media Arts and Design students complete electives<br />

to round out their education in areas of interest.<br />

The number of electives required varies by concentration.<br />

See the Program Outline for the concentration of interest<br />

for details.<br />

` PHL-145 | Critical Thinking and Problem Solving<br />

Prerequisite(s): ENG-080 with minimum grade of “C”<br />

This course provides necessary skills to analyze and<br />

evaluate ideas and concepts that are encountered<br />

during and after college education. Emphasis is placed<br />

on the practical techniques to solve problems logically<br />

and effectively.<br />

` PHL-405 | Ethics and Legal Issues<br />

Prerequisite(s): ENG-135 with minimum grade of “C”<br />

This course covers human behavior as it applies to the<br />

individual in the conduct of business. Understanding<br />

legal principles and practices that govern relationships<br />

and rights will be emphasized. This course does not<br />

determine correct ethical action; rather, it is designed to<br />

assist you as a potential businessperson to make more<br />

informed and ethical decisions on a daily basis. Since<br />

there is no universal agreement on the correct ethical<br />

business norms, critical thinking and informed decisionmaking<br />

are emphasized<br />

This course will address political relations and global<br />

policies relating to international affairs and trade<br />

This course will provide students with an overview of<br />

international politics, including states, power, national<br />

interests, instruments of foreign policy, challenges<br />

organizations, global communications and economic<br />

interdependence.<br />

Professional Development<br />

` PDT-115 | <strong>College</strong> Research and Study Skills<br />

Prerequisite(s): None<br />

Students develop the skills necessary to obtain the<br />

maximum benefit from a college education, including<br />

how to study, take notes, take tests, manage time,<br />

communicate and interrelate effectively with others,<br />

and reduce stress and enhance energy and well being.<br />

Students are required to complete this course in their<br />

first or second term of enrollment.<br />

` PDT-200 | Portfolio Workshop I<br />

Prerequisite(s): DES-108 and DES-100 or GAM-100<br />

This course will introduce the student to the techniques<br />

of professional portfolio design, enhance skills in time<br />

management, and reinforce a culture of reworking and<br />

prototyping. Students will assemble and present a<br />

preliminary, professional portfolio for review by a board<br />

of faculty and advisors.<br />

` PDT-300 | Portfolio Workshop II<br />

Prerequisite(s): PDT-315 and DES-231 or GAM-204<br />

This course will reinforce the techniques of professional<br />

portfolio design. Students will be introduced to selfpromotional<br />

web design, and gain an understanding<br />

of building a reel. Students will assemble and present<br />

an intermediate, professional portfolio for review by a<br />

board of faculty and advisors.<br />

` PDT-315 | Information Literacy/Advanced<br />

Research<br />

Prerequisite(s): PDT-115; ENG-155<br />

This course explores media literacy, research & library<br />

skills, critical literacy, and information ethics, in the<br />

context of information literacy. Students will learn to<br />

recognize when information is needed and will gain a<br />

deeper understanding of how to locate, evaluate, and<br />

effectively use the needed information.<br />
