Discrimination and Harassment<br />

<strong>Mt</strong>. <strong>Sierra</strong> <strong>College</strong> is committed to the concept of mutual respect, consideration, and personal responsibility, allowing all<br />

members of the <strong>College</strong> community the right to work and learn in an environment free from discrimination and harassment.<br />

The <strong>College</strong> complies with the anti-discrimination and harassment provisions of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,Title<br />

IX of the Educational Amendments, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and all<br />

other federal and state laws and regulations.<br />

The <strong>College</strong> maintains and strictly enforces a zero tolerance policy against discrimination and harassment on the basis of<br />

any legally protected characteristic, including gender and sexual orientation. Complaints of discrimination or harassment can<br />

be made orally or in writing to an instructor, Department Chairperson, administrator, or any management employee of the<br />

<strong>College</strong>. A formal grievance may be filed regarding such conduct. The Human Resources Coordinator serves as the Title IX<br />

Coordinator for the <strong>College</strong>.<br />

Campus Safety<br />

A truly safe campus can be achieved only through the cooperation of students, faculty, and staff. It is the responsibility of all<br />

members of the <strong>Mt</strong>. <strong>Sierra</strong> <strong>College</strong> community to report any crime, suspicious activity, or other emergency on campus to the<br />

appropriate <strong>College</strong> official.<br />

All visitors are required to check in with the <strong>College</strong> Receptionist. <strong>College</strong> premises are open to enrolled students, faculty and<br />

staff, and visitors with legitimate business. <strong>Mt</strong>. <strong>Sierra</strong> <strong>College</strong> reserves the right to limit, revoke or refuse campus access at any<br />

time. To insure the safety of the <strong>College</strong> community, <strong>Mt</strong> <strong>Sierra</strong> <strong>College</strong> maintains video surveillance of the campus, including<br />

hallways and classrooms.<br />

Students who are witness to or victim of a crime should immediately report the incident to campus security, local law<br />

enforcement, and to the Dean. Any <strong>College</strong> staff member will be glad to assist during an emergency. The policy regarding<br />

acts or threats of violence is fully covered under the Workplace Violence Prevention section of this catalog.<br />

When reporting an incident be prepared to provide the following information:<br />

Ì Description of incident<br />

Ì Date, time, and location of occurrence<br />

Ì Description of the person(s) or vehicle(s) involved<br />

Ì Individuals notified of incident<br />

Upon receipt of this report, the <strong>College</strong> administration will determine the appropriate response that could include disciplinary<br />

action against the offender(s), notification to law enforcement, notification to the campus community, or other public safety<br />

alternatives as determined appropriate.<br />

In compliance with the Campus Crime and Security Act of 1990, a report is released each fall and distributed annually to<br />

the student population. This report provides campus crime statistics as well as suggestions regarding crime prevention<br />

strategies, important policy information about emergency procedures, and information on support services for victims of<br />

sexual assault. A copy of the most recent report is available upon request.<br />

Workplace Violence Prevention<br />

<strong>Mt</strong>. <strong>Sierra</strong> <strong>College</strong> strives to provide a workplace and learning environment free from acts and threats of violence. The <strong>College</strong><br />

expressly prohibits and will not tolerate any acts or threats of violence by or against any <strong>College</strong> student, employee, or visitor.<br />

This policy is applicable to all individuals while on <strong>College</strong> premises, and also while off the premises when such acts or threats<br />

are directly related to the individual’s status or activities as a student or employee at <strong>Mt</strong>. <strong>Sierra</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

The <strong>College</strong> will take reasonable steps to prevent acts or threats of violence from occurring, and will take prompt action against<br />

any individual who engages in threatening behavior or acts of violence. Such action will include, as appropriate, removal from<br />

the premises by security or law enforcement personnel and prosecution to the full extent of the law.<br />

<strong>Mt</strong>. <strong>Sierra</strong> <strong>College</strong> prohibits students, employees, and visitors from bringing firearms or other weapons onto <strong>College</strong> premises.<br />

Compliance with this policy will be strictly enforced and sanctions for violations will be imposed, up to and including expulsion from<br />

the <strong>College</strong> or termination of employment.<br />

The <strong>College</strong> maintains a program to eliminate violence or threats of violence from its learning and working environment,<br />

including the provision of workplace violence awareness and prevention training, a Threat Assessment Coordinator, and<br />

a Workplace Violence Prevention Team. The senior management team of the <strong>College</strong> fully supports the work of the Threat<br />

Assessment Coordinator and Workplace Violence Prevention Team in investigating and resolving problems of workplace<br />

violence or threats of violence whenever they occur.<br />

Students and employees have a duty to report any threats or acts of violence that they observe or of which they become<br />

aware. Such a report may be made to a faculty member, <strong>College</strong> administrator, supervisor, or management employee of<br />

the <strong>College</strong>. If circumstances permit and a student so desires, a formal complaint may be made to the Human Resources<br />

Coordinator or the Campus Director.<br />
