Roads, Air, Rail Transportation accidents can have serious impacts on<br />

lives, the economy <strong>and</strong> the environment.<br />

Road accidents cost the country billions <strong>of</strong> R<strong>and</strong>s each<br />

year. The Council for Scientific <strong>and</strong> Industrial Research<br />

(CSIR) has estimated the average cost <strong>of</strong> road accidents<br />

in South Africa. The cost <strong>of</strong> a single fatal accident is<br />

estimated at R329 375; a serious injury at R81 992; a<br />

slight injury accident at R21 886, <strong>and</strong> a damage only<br />

accident at R15 564. On this basis the total cost <strong>of</strong> road<br />

accidents nationally is in the region <strong>of</strong> R12 billion per<br />

year!<br />

The transport <strong>of</strong> <strong>hazard</strong>ous materials should also be<br />

investigated, especially where these routes cross<br />

residential <strong>and</strong> naturally sensitive areas such as wetl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />
