NSS-9 SATELLITE SUCCESSFULLY
LAUNCHED
The NSS-9 satellite was successfully launched
onboard an Ariane 5 ECA rocket from the European
Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, on February
12. NSS-9 was manufactured by Orbital Sciences
Corporation and is poised to be the 40th satellite
in SES’ global fleet. The NSS-9 spacecraft
will be positioned at the orbital location of 183
degrees East, a prime connectivity slot for the
Pacific Ocean Region. The spacecraft carries
44 active C-band transponders, and features
three beams that can interconnect on a transponder-by-transponder
basis: a global beam
providing coverage of the entire earth visible from
183 degrees East; a West Hemi beam (covering
Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan,
China, Korea and the Pacific Islands); and an
East Hemi beam (providing coverage and connectivity
to the U.S., Hawaii and Polynesia).
ASTRA 1M READY FOR OPERATION
SES Astra has announced that its new Astra 1M
satellite has been successfully deployed at its final
orbital position at 19.2 degrees East and is ready
for commercial operations. The satellite, which was
built by EADS Astrium and launched from Baikonur,
Kazakhstan, on 5 November 2008 has successfully
passed all necessary in-orbit tests of the hardware
and broadcasting functionalities on board.
With its 36 transponders, Astra 1M will deliver
DTH and HDTV services to continental Europe.
170 MILLION HDTV EUROPEAN
HOUSEHOLDS BY 2013
According to a report from Euroconsult and
NPA, currently 59 million European households
are equipped with HD-enabled TV sets. That
figure is set to grow to 116 million in 2010, a
51% penetration rate and explode to 220 million
in 2018. Driving this adoption is the steady
decline in prices for flat screens since 2004, and
the imminent inclusion of HDTV capability as a
standard feature in flat screens sold throughout
Europe. The number of pay-TV networks in Europe
offering HD almost tripled in the last two years.
internet) and will be broadcast by the ASTRA
satellite system from the prime orbital position 19.2
degrees East, which already serves more than
five million French direct-to-home households.
At the end of the third quarter 2008 there were
5.643 million subscribers to IPTV services in
France, according to new figures from the French
34.6% of the total number of ADSL subscribers
in France at the end of the third quarter of last
year (16.299 million), compared to 28.8% of the
total (14.09 million) one year previously. France
ITALY
TISCALI CANCELS IPTV SERVICE
Italian broadband ISP Tiscali has shut down its
ADSL-based IPTV service in Italy, with poor subscriber
take-up thought to be behind the decision
to pull the service. It has not revealed any plans
to cancel its UK-based IPTV service, which has
attracted investor interest from broadcaster and
broadband provider BSkyB. However, in December
it was reported that disagreements over the
price of the UK unit of Cagliari-based Tiscali had
caused BSkyB to withdraw from negotiations.
start their test broadcasts for a period of one year.
