DISH NETWORK INTRODUCES<br />
SLINGBOX TECHNOLOGY<br />
Satellite TV provider Dish Network Corp unveiled<br />
the new Vip 922 DVR box in January that allows<br />
people watch to their favorite TV shows on any<br />
Internet-enabled device. The Slingbox is a device<br />
that lets people watch cable and <strong>satellite</strong> programing<br />
from a computer or mobile phone with<br />
a broadband Internet connection. In addition to<br />
TV sets, people can watch their recorded TV<br />
programs and sports events on their desktops<br />
at home, their laptops on the road, their smart<br />
phones, iPhones, Blackberry, and more.<br />
NEULION LAUNCHES NEW IPTV HD BOX<br />
NeuLion has introduced the iPTV HD TV Box<br />
delivering HD programming in 720p and 1080i,<br />
providing adaptive streaming in HD without buffering.<br />
NeuLion now offers HD streaming services<br />
of live TV channels, live events and VOD over<br />
the Internet directly to the television. NeuLion’s<br />
existing iPTV HD PC browser service provides<br />
HD quality programming of live channels, sports,<br />
entertainment events and VOD in up to a 1080i<br />
format to its Network Partners across the globe.<br />
VERIZON FIOS WITH 1.9 MILLION<br />
IPTV SUBSCRIBERS<br />
Verizon FiOS TV customers now have a total of 105<br />
HD channels available, and over 1,400 HD VOD<br />
titles, which are offered each month. Verizon FiOS<br />
is available for sale to more than 8.2 million homes<br />
and small businesses in 14 states. The company<br />
added 303,000 FiOS TV subscribers in the fourth<br />
quarter and almost 1 million in 2008, bringing the<br />
total to 1.9 million out of 9.2 million homes that<br />
have access to the service. In contrast, AT&T is<br />
hoping to have 1 million subscribers to its rival<br />
IPTV offering, U-verse, by the end of the year.<br />
TIME WARNER WITH 100 HD CHANNEL IN NY<br />
Time Warner Cable now offers 100 High-Definition<br />
channels in New York City. The HD lineup in<br />
New York includes an HD Movies On Demand<br />
feature and StartOver, which enables customers<br />
to restart a program in progress from the beginning.<br />
Time Warner offers roughly 60 HD channels<br />
free with its digital cable package. The remaining<br />
channels must be purchased with premium movie<br />
channels or other programming packages.<br />
17 MILLION HDTV HOUSEHOLDS<br />
DO NOT WATCH HD<br />
17 million households with HDTVs installed do not<br />
watch HD programming, according to a new study<br />
from research organization In-Stat. Last year,<br />
there were 39 million households in the United<br />
States that owned HDTVs, of which 22 million are<br />
considered HDTV households or those owning<br />
HD-capable sets and receiving and watching HD<br />
programming. According to In-Stat, last year saw<br />
a 40 percent uptake in the number of households<br />
choosing to receive HD programming.<br />
SPACE SYSTEMS/LORAL TO BUILD<br />
INTELSAT 17 SATELLITE<br />
Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) has finalized a<br />
previously announced <strong>satellite</strong> contract award to<br />
provide a new spacecraft to Intelsat. Intelsat 17 is<br />
a C- and Ku-band spacecraft which is to be available<br />
for launch in 2010 and will be located at 66<br />
degrees East, where it will replace Intelsat 704.<br />

ARGENTINA<br />
<strong>TELE</strong>FONICA LAUNCHS VOD TESTS<br />
Telefonica Argentina has started testing a<br />
VOD system over the IPTV network with 100<br />
clients in Buenos Aires. It includes movies,<br />
children’s programmes, weather information<br />
and karaoke. Clients are able to access a<br />
content library on either their computer or TV<br />
set, via the installation of a modem and a settop<br />
box. A launch date has yet to be named.<br />
TELPIN LAUNCHES IPTV SERVICE<br />
Telecommunications operator Cooperativa de<br />
Telefonos de Pinamar (Telpin) now offers IPTV<br />
services in the country. Telpin is operating an internet<br />
television portal called Telpin TV, offering VOD<br />
content such as local news, music and general interest<br />
shows. Although telecom operators are currently<br />
prohibited from entering the pay-TV sector, they can<br />
launch VOD services until the legislation is modified.<br />
COLOMBIA<br />
UNE ENDS 2008 WITH 30.000<br />
IPTV SUBSCRIBERS<br />
Telecommunications operator UNE EPM ended<br />
2008 with 30.000 subscribers for its IPTV service,<br />
one year after launch. It is now aiming to reach<br />
around 150.000 by the end of this year. Une is<br />
using Orca Interactive middleware, Verimatrix<br />
CAS and set-top boxes from Sagem, integrated by<br />
local supplier Grupo Unión. UNE is now focused<br />
on expanding the service into other regions of
