precipitates using XRD. In <strong>the</strong> present study no such peaks corresp<strong>on</strong>ding to Mg3<str<strong>on</strong>g>Sb</str<strong>on</strong>g>;<br />

precipitate is observed in XRD studies. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <strong>the</strong> EDS analysis carried<br />

out <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mg;;<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> particle indicate <strong>the</strong> presence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sb</str<strong>on</strong>g> in it as shown in Figure 4.21. In<br />

order to have more informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> distributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sb</str<strong>on</strong>g> over <strong>the</strong> Mg2<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> intermetallic,<br />

line scan across <strong>the</strong> particle <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> X-ray mapping was also carried out <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> given in<br />

Figures 4.22 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 4.23 respectively. These studies c<strong>on</strong>firm no <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sb</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong><br />

Mg;<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> particles, ra<strong>the</strong>r distributed evenly throughout <strong>the</strong> Mg2<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> intermetallic.<br />

Elements like Ca. P <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sb</str<strong>on</strong>g> are normally added to Al-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> alloys to modify <strong>the</strong><br />

eutectic <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> primary <str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> particles. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sr</str<strong>on</strong>g> is also a well-known modifier for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> in<br />

hypoeutectic Al-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> alloys [268, 269]. Based <strong>on</strong> this, it is believed that <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sr</str<strong>on</strong>g> can also<br />

change <strong>the</strong> morphology <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mg;<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> intermetallic. However, studies <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sr</str<strong>on</strong>g> modificati<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mg2<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> intermetallic in Mg alloys is not reported in literature. In <strong>the</strong> present study,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Sr</str<strong>on</strong>g> modificati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mg2<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> intermetallic in AZ9l alloy is carried out <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> found that <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sr</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

changes <strong>the</strong> morphology <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mg;<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g>milar to <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sb</str<strong>on</strong>g> modified alloy <strong>the</strong> XRD pattem<br />

taken <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sr</str<strong>on</strong>g> modified alloy does not show any peaks for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sr</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>taining comp<strong>on</strong>ent.<br />

However, EDS spectrum taken at <strong>the</strong> Mg2<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> precipitates shown in Figure 4.24<br />

indicates <strong>the</strong> presence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sr</str<strong>on</strong>g> in it. X-ray mapping <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sr</str<strong>on</strong>g> modified Mg;<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

intermetallic (Figure 4.25) also indicates <strong>the</strong> distributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sr</str<strong>on</strong>g> in Mg;<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> intermetallic<br />

IS even.<br />

From <strong>the</strong>se results, it is more logical to c<strong>on</strong>clude that both <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sb</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sr</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

additi<strong>on</strong> restrict <strong>the</strong> growth <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mg2<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> intermetallic during solidificati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> change<br />

<strong>the</strong> morphology ra<strong>the</strong>r than act as a nucleant. Uneven size <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> shape <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> modified<br />

Mg;<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g> particles are also support this modificati<strong>on</strong> mechanism. However, more<br />

rigorous TEM studied are needed to c<strong>on</strong>firm <strong>the</strong> modificati<strong>on</strong> mechanism, which is<br />

included in <strong>the</strong> future course <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> work.<br />
