With natural uranium as a fuel, it is essential to c<strong>on</strong>serve neutr<strong>on</strong>s by using<br />

materials in <strong>the</strong> reactor, which will not absorb <strong>the</strong>m readily. Natural uranium plants<br />

with operating temperatures suitable for power producti<strong>on</strong> essentially determine <strong>the</strong><br />

general reactor design <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> limit <strong>the</strong> canning material to magnesium <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> coolant<br />

gas to magnesium dioxide [57]. The advantages <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> magnesium as a canning material<br />

over competing materials are: (a) low tendency to absorb neutr<strong>on</strong>s, (b) does not alloy<br />

with uranium, (c) adequate resistance to carb<strong>on</strong> dioxide up to <strong>the</strong> highest service<br />

temperatures envisi<strong>on</strong>ed, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> (d) good <strong>the</strong>rmal c<strong>on</strong>ductivity [57].<br />

2.3.5 Sporting <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Electr<strong>on</strong>ic Industries<br />

Apart from transport <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> missile comp<strong>on</strong>ents magnesium also finds<br />

applicati<strong>on</strong> in electr<strong>on</strong>ics <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> house holding items. Some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> examples are<br />

computer housing <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> mobile teleph<strong>on</strong>e cases, where lightness, suitability for thin<br />

wall casting <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> characteristic <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> electromagnetic shielding are <strong>the</strong> particular<br />

advantages [57]. Figure 2.3 shows some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> such applicati<strong>on</strong>s [58].<br />
