WE43 (Mg-4% Y—3.25% Nd-0.5% Zr) are comm<strong>on</strong>ly used for aircraft applicati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

due to <strong>the</strong>ir improved corrosi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> creep resistance.<br />

2.3.2 Defense Industries<br />

High specific strength <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> rigidity coupled with ease <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fabricati<strong>on</strong> are<br />

important for missile <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> space applicati<strong>on</strong>s. EZ33 (Mg-2.7% Zn-0.7% Zr-3.2% MM)<br />

s<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> castings are used in <strong>the</strong> “Skylark” research rockets. ZK5l (Mg-4.5% Zn-0.7%<br />

Zr) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> ZE41 castings have been used extensively for structural parts in British<br />

missiles [57].<br />

2.3.3 Automobile Industries<br />

Automobile industries are <strong>the</strong> latest beneficiary <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> magnesium, currently<br />

exploring its maximum usage. Table 2.3 gives a number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> applicati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> magnesium<br />

that are currently being addressed by <strong>the</strong> automotive industry. Comp<strong>on</strong>ents at <strong>the</strong> top<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this list, such as steering wheel armatures, cylinder head covers <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> instrument<br />

panel beams are already in significant producti<strong>on</strong>, while items at <strong>the</strong> bottom <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> list<br />

require several years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> intensive development before <strong>the</strong>y can be implemented [12].<br />

Figure 2.2 gives some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> automobile comp<strong>on</strong>ents made from magnesium<br />

alloys [58].<br />
