Figure 2.17: Stress dependency <strong>on</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary creep rates <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> different Mg-Al<br />

based alloys [186]<br />

The superior creep resistance by o<strong>the</strong>r alloys over AZ91 alloy is explained by<br />

<strong>the</strong> amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> dynamic B precipitates form during high temperature exposure<br />

[28, 186]. The cast microstructure <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> AS2l <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> AE42 c<strong>on</strong>tain less amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

supersaturated a Mg because <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> less aluminum c<strong>on</strong>tent compared to AZ91 alloy <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

as a result, <strong>the</strong>ir microstructures are much more stable <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>siderably less<br />

disc<strong>on</strong>tinuous precipitates occurs during exposure at elevated temperatures. Moreover<br />

<strong>the</strong>se alloys also c<strong>on</strong>tain str<strong>on</strong>g stable intergranular phases, Mg2<str<strong>on</strong>g>Si</str<strong>on</strong>g>, in <strong>the</strong> case <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

A821 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Al4RE in <strong>the</strong> case <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> AE42, which can be expected to pin grain boundaries<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> hinder both grain boundary movement.<br />
