That rate increased another 1% to 76.4% in 2002 then fell back down to 75.5% in 2003. Among the
racial/ethnic groups, Whites had the highest prenatal care rate throughout 2001 to 2003; followed by
Asians, Native Americans, Blacks and Hispanics, respectively. However, in 2002, Native Americans and
Blacks switched.
The incidence of low birth weight babies in Nevada increased to 7.6% in 2001 from 7.2% in 2000.
That rate then dipped to 7.5% in 2002 and then increased to 8.1% in 2003; which is the highest incidence
of low birth weight babies in Nevada in almost 10 years. Although the rate of Blacks improved a small
amount from 12.9% in 2000 to 12.8% in 2001, the rate experienced an increase to 14.8% in 2002, then
decreased to 13.7% in 2003. This racial/ethnic group was still the highest low birth weight rate in
Nevada throughout 2001 to 2003.
Nevada’s teen birth rate continued the general decreasing trend of the past 10 years for all teen age
groups. The birth rate for females ages 15-19 decreased from 1994’s 68.7 per 1,000 female age-specific
population to 48.4 in 2003.
