Nevada continues to see an increase in the total number of Births, Deaths and Divorces that occur each
year. However, Nevada’s Birth Rate (per 1,000 population) decreased slightly (0.34%) from 14.72 in 2001
to 14.67 in 2002, and remained constant in 2003. Nevada’s Crude Death Rate (per 100,000 population)
dropped from 763.7 in 2001 to 753.8 in 2002, a 1.3% decrease. The rate then increased 2.3% to 771.3 in
2003. Once age-adjusted comparisons were made, the Mortality Rate (per 100,000 – 2000 US Standard
population) for Nevada decreased 1.7% from 2001 (910.9) to 2002 (895.3), then increased 1.9% in 2003
(912.3). Although Divorce data for the year 2001 are not available, the Divorce Rate (per 1,000 population)
did experience a decline from 2000 (7.4) to 2002 (7.0). Then, in 2003, that rate increased to 7.2. Nevada
still remains among the highest in the nation for Divorce Rates. This standing may reflect Nevada’s
relatively lenient state laws, combined with the state’s small population base, resulting in disproportionately
high rates.
Anthony and Emily remained on top as the most popular male and female names, respectively, for 2001,
2002 and 2003. Anthony was then followed by Jacob, Christopher, Michael and Daniel in 2001; 2002 put
Daniel in front of Jacob with Christopher coming in after Michael. 2003 had Jacob back in the number two
spot followed by Michael, Joshua and Jose. Emily was followed by Ashley, Madison, Hannah and Alexis in
2001; for 2002, Ashley and Madison switched as did Hannah and Alexis. Ashley reclaimed the number two
spot, for 2003, then came Emma, Alexis and Madison, respectively.
