DEFINITIONS<br />

ABORTION: The termination of a human pregnancy with an intention other than to produce a live<br />

birth or to remove a dead fetus. (NRS 442.240)<br />

DEATH: A person who has sustained irreversible cessation of all functioning of the brain,<br />

including the brain stem, is considered dead. (National Center for <strong>Health</strong> Statistics (NCHS))<br />

DIVORCE: Legal termination of a marriage. (NCHS)<br />

FETAL DEATH: A birth that occurs after at least 20 weeks gestation in which the child shows no evidence<br />

of life after complete birth. (NRS 440.070)<br />

INFANT DEATH: Deaths occurring to individuals of less than one year of age. (NCHS)<br />

LIVE BIRTH: A birth in which the child shows evidence of life after complete birth. A birth is complete when<br />

the child is entirely outside the mother, even if the cord is uncut and the placenta is<br />

still attached. Evidence of life includes heart action, breathing, or coordinated movement<br />

of voluntary muscles. (NRS 440.030)<br />

LOW<br />

BIRTH WEIGHT: A birth wherein the birth weight is less than 2,500 grams (5 lbs 8 oz). (NCHS)<br />

MARRIAGE: A formal mutual relation of husband and wife that is filed with the County Recorder in<br />

the county where the license was issued. (NCHS)<br />

NEONATAL DEATH: Death occurring to infants in the first 27 days of life. (NCHS)<br />
