Nevada continues to see a steady increase in the number of births in the state; however, the birth rate
continues to decrease. Nevada’s birth rate went from 15.09 (per 1,000 population) in 2000, to 14.72 (per
1,000 population) in 2001, and then dropped again to 14.67 (per 1,000 population) in both 2002 and
2003. There were a total of 31,622 live births in Nevada in 2001; of those, 31,297 were with the
mother’s residency being Nevada. In 2002, the number of live births in Nevada increased to 32,798 with
32,423 of those births being to mother’s who were Nevada residents. The number of live births increased
again to 33,941 in 2003; 33,605 of those live births were with the mother’s residency being Nevada.
There were small changes to the birth rates in Clark, Washoe, and All Other Counties from 2001
through 2003; however, the distribution of births in Nevada remained high for Clark County Residents. In
2001, 72.3% of the total births in Nevada were to Clark County Residents, Washoe County Residents
accounted for 16.1% and All Other Counties, as a whole, had 10.6%. Those distribution percentages
remained about the same for 2002 and 2003. The highest crude birth rates for individual counties in 2001
were Clark (15.3), Carson City (14.5) and Washoe County (14.4). Then in 2002, the highest crude birth
rates were in Clark (15.2), Washoe (14.8) and Carson City (13.8). The ranking was similar in 2003,
with Clark (15.3) on top again, followed by Washoe (14.5) and Elko County (14.0), respectively.
The crude birth rate for Whites was the lowest among all other racial/ethnic groups in Nevada for
2001 through 2003. The Hispanic ethnic group had the highest crude birth rate, followed by Asians,
Blacks, and Native Americans for 2001 and 2002. In 2003, that ranking remained the same with the
exception of Asians and Blacks, which were switched.
