China: 50% of new buildings fail energy standards (Jan. 14 2008)
All new buildings in the country were designed for energy efficiency by property
developers - but only half have been found to meet national energy conservation
standards. The sidestepping of energy conservation requirements by property developers
poses a threat to meeting the overall green goal, in which the construction sector is
expected to contribute to 30 percent of total energy savings.
Coal shortages, transport problems cause power gaps (Jan.23 2008)
China is experiencing a power gap of up to 69.63 million kilowatts (kw) as a coal shortage
cuts generation at some plants, according to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission
(SERC). The shortage has led 13 provincial-level regions, including Hubei, Sichuan,
Shaanxi, Yunnan and Guangdong to ration electricity. The coal gap is 330,000 tons per
day, or 14 percent short of the total consumption of 2.32 million tons.
