around campus “My advice to you is to remember the acronym N.E.W.S.,” Dean White said. “Be nice, be excellent, be well and be still.” Roland Johnson, president of the State Bar of Texas, following Dean White’s remarks, encouraged the students to become active in the legal community. “Don’t wait until you graduate or pass the bar to get involved in the legal community,” Johnson said. “Start now.” The Honorable Terry R. Means of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas spoke about some of his experiences during law school and then administered the oath of professionalism to the class. Elliott Inn receives Project of the Year award The Elliott Inn of Phi Delta Phi at Texas Wesleyan School of Law was recently recognized with an award for the Project of the Year at the 59th General Convention in New Orleans. The award was one of only two given to inns from the U.S., Mexico, Canada and Germany. Phi Delta Phi is the oldest legal organization in continuous existence in the United States and is patterned after the Inns of Court in England. Named for faculty adviser Frank Elliott, the Texas Wesleyan School of Law chapter was presented the award for the two-day “Teddy Bear Immunity Drive.” After purchasing a teddy bear and then taking it to class, students were immune from being called on by their professors. 2L Michael Huebner, magister of the local chapter, accepted the award on behalf of last year’s board of directors at the New Orleans convention. Reflecting on the success of the project, Huebner said, “All you could see were teddy bears in Professor Rambo’s constitutional law class.” Local attorneys mentor students For the third year in a row, students at Texas Wesleyan School of Law have been paired with American Airlines attorneys as part of the diversity mentorship program. Targeted at second- and third-year law students, the diversity mentorship program seeks to provide minority students with guidance and career advice from mentoring attorneys throughout the academic year. This year 12 students were paired with 12 attorneys. “The American Airlines Law Student Diversity Mentorship Program offers a wonderful opportunity for our law students to gain insight and guidance on the practical aspects of the practice of law,” Arturo Errisuriz, assistant dean for career services, said. “We are grateful to the AA attorneys for volunteering their time and are delighted to partner with them again this year.” A kickoff luncheon was held on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Shula’s 347 Grill in Fort Worth to allow students and attorneys the opportunity to network and socialize with each other before they begin their work together in the coming months. The program is organized by the law school’s office of career services, and participants are selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Student activities associated with the program range from shadowing attorneys at negotiations and hearings to attending continuing legal education programs presented in-house at American Airlines. Mock trial team advances to semifinals Texas Wesleyan School of Law’s mock trial team won 3-0 rounds against South Texas, SMU and Baylor to become semifinalists in the 2009 Lone Star Classic National Mock Trial Invitational. 12 Photo by Dan Brothers The Lone Star Classic is an invitational mock trial competition hosted by St. Mary’s School of Law in San Antonio and is widely considered among the most competitive mock trial tournaments in the nation. Invited to this year’s competition were Baylor, Brooklyn, Campbell, Catholic, Cumberland, Faulkner, Fordham, Florida State, University of Houston, LSU, Michigan State, Pace, SMU, South Texas, Texas Wesleyan, Villanova and Wake Forest. Texas Wesleyan’s team, consisting of 3L Ashlea Almond, 2L Daniel Clanton, 3L Matt Giadrosich and 3L Matt Gilpin, was the only Texas team advancing to the semifinal rounds, joining Villanova (last year’s winner), Fordham and Faulkner. At the semifinal round, Texas Wesleyan narrowly lost a 2-1 ballot to Fordham. Faulkner defeated Villanova, advancing both Fordham and Faulker into the final round. “The tireless commitment shown by these students was impressive,” Vince Cruz Jr., advocacy director and coach for this team, said. “These students demonstrated the work ethic, eye for detail, and fundamental skill sets needed to succeed as really good trial attorneys in the real world. I’m very proud of these students and am particularly excited to see Texas Wesleyan’s advocacy programs be so competitive nationally.” z Students and American Airlines attorneys participated in the third year of the diversity mentorship program. The mentorship opportunity was coordinated by the law school’s office of career services and seeks to provide students with guidance and advice from attorneys.
Chief Justice Joe Greenhill Golf Tournament The second annual Chief Justice Joe Greenhill Golf Tournament took place Saturday, May 16, at Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, Texas. Although rained out on the original tournament day during alumni reunion weekend, rainy weather could not keep golfers from the award-winning course a second time. The 25 teams were made up of area judges, law school alumni, faculty, students and other legal professionals. The tournament raised $20,000 for the Chief Justice Joe Greenhill Scholarship, an annual award that is given to a Texas Wesleyan law student who plans to work in public service and who displays professional integrity and excels academically. The winning team consisted of Texas Wesleyan University Senior Vice President William Bleibdrey, Trustees Mark Walker and Bob Lansford, and Pat Evans. Second place went to the team of Justin Huston, Mike Wurtz, Greg Hargrove and Scott Hargrove from McDonald Sanders, P.C., a tournament sponsor. Blake Hedgecock ’00, Richard Johnson ’00, Jason Cantrell and Matthew Germany ’99 fi elded the third place team. Contest winners included Judge Andy Chatham, Tom McKenzie ’94, Richard Johnson ’00, Trustee Mark Walker, David Mykel, Judge Tim Murphy and Jay Zeleskey. The Chief Justice Joe Greenhill Scholarship was initiated in 2008, in conjunction with a donation to Texas Wesleyan School of Law of several pieces of the former Texas Supreme Court justice’s memorabilia. The golf tournament, an event that has become an annual tradition as part of the alumni reunion weekend, was offi cially named in honor of Justice Greenhill in 2008. The growing success of the tournament is due to the continued support of the alumni community.
