Photo by Dan Brothers In 2008, Chief Justice Joe Greenhill donated various items from his tenure in the legal profession that will be housed in the collections room, including gavels, photos and publications. In 2008, Greenhill selected Texas Wesleyan School of Law to receive his donated personal papers and memorabilia to establish an archive for the use of researchers interested in public policy. Dean Frederic White provided the opening remarks during the event and was followed by Michelle Rigual, director of the Dee J. Kelly Law Library and professor of law. Rigual said the library will be creating a special collections room for the Greenhill memorabilia that will include gavels, awards, bench chairs and other items from his tenure in the legal profession. When completed, the 430-square-foot 3L Tracy Stearns Bush was presented the Chief Justice Joe Greenhill Scholarship by Craig Woodcook ’05. study room will provide long-term storage of the collection and act as a space that will allow researchers to use the materials. Karin Strohbeck, law school circulation librarian who is also certified in archival administration, will be processing and indexing the collection. Dee J. Kelly and John H. Cayce, Chief Justice of the Second Court of Appeals, also spoke about their experiences with Greenhill during the event. Kelly noted that Greenhill had received “every award that can be given to a lawyer or judge.” “Greenhill is a person of stature and distinction,” Cayce said. “His contributions to the legal profession are great and varied.” William “Bill” Greenhill, partner at Haynes and Boone, LLP and Chief Justice Joe Greenhill’s son, was in attendance and expressed his thanks to Kelly and Cayce for their kind words about his father. 3L Tracy Stearns Bush was awarded the first ever Chief Justice Joe Greenhill Scholarship, presented to her by Craig Woodcook ’05, law school alumni association board member. In 2009, the golf tournament raised $20,000 to be used toward the scholarship. Born in 1914 in Houston, Greenhill received his B.A., B.B.A. and LL.B. degrees from the University of Texas. Greenhill has been active in the Texas legal profession for many years, including 25 years on the Supreme Court of Texas. In 1950, he was one of the co-founders of Graves, Dougherty & Greenhill in Austin.
