alumni report Challenge gift to benefit advocacy programs The law degree had barely been in his hands for a month when Matthew Wright ’08, along with his wife, Andy, decided to give back to the institution that had played such a substantial and positive role in each of their lives over the last few years. But they didn’t stop there. They wanted fellow alumni to give back, too. The Matthew and Andy Wright Challenge Gift began on Feb. 1 and continued through June 30. The Wrights offered a challenge gift to the law school’s Advocacy Endowment Campaign: for every $2 donated through June 30, they matched with $1 of their own, up to $5,000. Funds raised for the Advocacy Endowment Campaign will benefit each of the advocacy programs at the law school, which include moot court, mock trial and alternative dispute resolution. Donations are necessary to help offset the costs incurred through competitions, such as travel expenses and training, and those generated through intramural competitions that the school hosts. Letter from the Director of Alumni Relations & Advancement Dear Alumni and Friends: As you read this edition of Wesleyan Lawyer, I hope you are able to see the significant impact you have on our community. Thanks to your generous support, we are able to advance the reputation and the mission of the law school. As the year comes to an end, I’d like to share a few noteworthy accomplishments with you. The Wesleyan Law School Annual Fund: This year we raised more than $52,000 for the Wesleyan Law School Annual Fund, enabling the law school to make improvements to the facility on the second floor, to provide more scholarship dollars to deserving students, and to attract new faculty members. More than 200 alumni donated to the fund this year, providing us with an alumni giving percentage of 10 percent, an incredible improvement from the previous years’ alumni giving percentages (see graph below). This increased percentage also helped us remain competitive with other law schools, as the average law school alumni giving percentage is 12 percent. With the leadership of Jessica Sharma Graham ’04 as the annual fund chair, this year we hope to increase our alumni giving percentage to 20 percent and raise $100,000 for the Wesleyan Law School Annual Fund. New Alumni Events and Programs: Our office is busier than ever. In creating more CLE opportunities for our alumni, we have increased attendance at monthly luncheons and provided Texas Wesleyan School of Law Annual Fund Statistics Number of Alumni Donors to Annual Fund by Fund Year Just three years ago, donations to the Wesleyan Law School Annual Fund totaled $3,400. Each year we have increased the amount of donations to the annual fund, this year reaching an all-time high of more than $52,000. more opportunities for alumni to network with one another. We also hosted an Alumni Community Crawfish Boil as part of our annual alumni weekend, inviting students, alumni, friends, faculty and staff to attend. The event proved to be a great success, with alumni reconnecting with old friends and law school faculty and staff! As you can see, many individuals, friends and alumni have taken the initiative to create new programs, activities and/or fundraising endeavors. I invite and encourage you do to the same: take an active role in your alumni association and our legal community. We are a young law school, and we have a lot of growth ahead of us. The great universities, law schools and graduate programs didn’t become great overnight; these institutions are built on years of tradition, service and financial support. So, don’t sit on the sidelines and watch things happen – get involved and make things happen! As always, our office is open to you.
