The Role of Small-Scale Aquaculture in Rural<br />

Development<br />

Poverty alleviation is central to the concept of rural development.<br />

However, the prevailing development strategy in the 1960s and 1970s of<br />

structural change based on urban-industrial growth did not lead to the<br />

trickle-down of benefits to poor people in rural areas. “Rural<br />

development” approaches, thus, emerged to address more directly the<br />

problem of rural poverty.<br />
