<strong>KCE</strong> Reports 111 Interventions in Alzheimer’s Disease 7<br />

Based on a European survey by <strong>the</strong> EFNS, 7 in most European countries about three<br />

quarters of <strong>the</strong> AD patients are diagnosed by a specialist in psychiatry, neurology, or<br />

geriatrics.<br />

1.1.4 Local initiatives<br />

Various initiatives exist and <strong>report</strong>s were made over <strong>the</strong> last years (or are in<br />

preparation) covering multiple aspects of AD for Belgium.<br />

• A most relevant project has been conducted by <strong>the</strong> Koning<br />

Boudewijnstichting - Fondation Roi Baudouin (KBS-FRB) and concerns<br />

“Improvement of <strong>the</strong> quality of life of patients with dementia and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

caregivers”. The following topics were studied:<br />

o The “image” of dementia (Carbonelle, Klein, Cassini, ULB)<br />

o Daily living and interventions to improve quality of life in AD (E. Salmon,<br />

Memory Centre, University Hospital, Liège)<br />

o Education and training of all types of caregivers;<br />

o Available services and organization of <strong>the</strong> care for <strong>the</strong> various target<br />

groups and during <strong>the</strong> different stages of <strong>the</strong> disease (C. Van Audenhove,<br />

KULeuven and M. Ylieff, ULg), including end-of-life and advanced care<br />

planned (Deliens L, VUB), and starting from <strong>the</strong> patient needs;<br />

o Patient rights and legal aspects (Nys H, Defloor S, KULeuven).<br />

o The <strong>report</strong> is to be published in 2009. Rondia et al., a KBS-FRB <strong>report</strong><br />

• Qualidem studies I en II, conducted by teams at <strong>the</strong> Universities of Leuven<br />

and Liège, and sponsored by RIZIV/INAMI. 3 A book published in 2007 with<br />

recommendations based on <strong>the</strong> Qualidem project is available. 8<br />

• A consensus <strong>report</strong> concerning <strong>the</strong> good medical use of medicines for<br />

dementia, published by <strong>the</strong> RIZIV/INAMI, 9<br />

• A systematic literature review of AD <strong>the</strong>rapy summarized as<br />

‘Transparantiefiche’ published by <strong>the</strong> Belgian Centre for Pharmaceutical<br />

Information, updated September 2006, and July 2008. 10<br />

• Controverses in policy concerning AD, WHO Collaborating Centre, F Baro<br />

et al, 2005<br />

• Development of clinical pathways for dementia care, 2005 and 2006 <strong>report</strong>s<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Federal public service, G. Haelterman, https://portal.health.fgov.be.<br />

• BelRAI (http://www.kuleuven.be/lucas/RAI), a Federal public service<br />

sponsored project on <strong>the</strong> use of a computer-based Resident Assessment<br />

Instrument (RAI) in selected elderly homes, in collaboration with <strong>the</strong><br />

Universities of Leuven and Liège. This measurement tool is being proposed to<br />

become a standard assessment tool across care settings.<br />

• Expertise network for AD (http://www.dementie.be/#), 9 centres plus a<br />

coordination centre providing information and education on AD, targeting<br />

professionals, and funded by <strong>the</strong> Flemish government; associated with <strong>the</strong><br />

Northsea Dementia Group, and eg involved in <strong>the</strong> development and<br />

evaluation of quality standards for residential care dementia.<br />

• Local activities of Baluchon Alzheimer, mainly in <strong>the</strong> French speaking parts of<br />

Belgium. This concerns an international organization providing respite care<br />

for caregivers, and financially supported by <strong>the</strong> insurance organizations.<br />

• Multiple patient organizations co-exist in Belgium:<br />

o Alzheimer Belgique – Mme Marguerite Mormal<br />

o Alzheimer Liga Vlaanderen (www.alzheimerliga.be)<br />

o Ligue Alzheimer Wallonia (www.alzheimer.be)<br />

• INTERDEM: A multi – professional network of gerontological researchpractitioners<br />

who focus on psychosocial (as opposed to neurobiological)<br />

approaches to <strong>the</strong> early recognition and intervention in dementia, throughout<br />

Europe (http://interdem.alzheimer-europe.org)
