ACTIVITY PARTICIPATION/SERVICE LEARNING Activity Participation All Junction City High School students must fulfill an Activity Participation requirement. This requirement can be fulfilled by the completion of one full year of participation in a high school club or organization or by participation in one full season of a high school sport. Also, the required number of Service-Learning hours must be completed before the student is allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies. Hours Required. Enrolled as a student at Junction City High School for: 4 years – 35 hours required 2 years – 18 hours required 3 years – 27 hours required 1 year – 9 hours required One-half of a year will count as an entire year. Minimum of 9 hours per year is recommended. We will accept a student’s Service-Learning hours when transferring from another accredited school when recorded as part of the student’s official transcript. A completed “Service-Learning Assignment Form” must be returned to Mr. Honas in Deever 125 for evaluation and approval. This form is available in the Career Counselor’s Office, Deever 125; Academy Counselor’s Offices, and the USD 475 Website. *“Service Learning Assignment form” can be found at the back of this catalog on page 122.
College Planning The Kansas Board of Regents governs six state universities: Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University, Pittsburg State University, University of Kansas, and Wichita State University. The Board of Regents has established three ways for a high school graduate to gain admission to a state university. Achieve an ACT score of 21 or higher OR Rank in the top 1/3 of the high school’s graduating class OR Complete the Qualified Admissions Pre-college curriculum (page 27) with a 2.0 GPA Obviously the requirements listed on page 27 cannot be completed in the last year or two of high school. College preparation and planning should begin before the ninth grade year. Students and parents should carefully consider the requirements for college entrance and work with the academy counselor to develop a plan to meet those requirements. In addition to academic preparation, students and their parents should consider many other areas as they anticipate a college education. The following additional activities would be appropriate for college planning. Freshman and Sophomore Years 1. Get involved in extracurricular activities both at school and in the community. 2. Begin checking out colleges for which you are qualified—academically and financially. 3. Take demanding classes and make good grades. 4. Find ways to begin interacting with students different from you. 5. Participate in educational planning and career exploration using Kansas Career Pipeline. www.kansascareerpipeline.org Junior Year 1. Continue good grades and activities. Selective colleges look at your record during the junior year. 2. Consider taking college courses while still in high school. 3. Learn if colleges you favor have “wait lists” and how they work. 4. Find out which colleges will let you apply early. 5. Begin learning about financial aid. 6. Visit college campuses. 7. Take the ACT and/or the SAT in the spring. 8. Develop a resume’. 9. Ask teachers and counselors for reference letters. 10. If interested in college athletics, register with the NCAA Clearinghouse in the spring. 11.
