Master's Thesis - Computer Graphics and Visualization - TU Delft

Preface
This project started in September, 2004, and ended in July, 2005. It is conducted at the Computer
Graphics & CAD/CAM Group at Delft University of Technology and the Soft Condensed Matter
Group at Leiden University.
The original motivation of this project is to develop a user interface in which users can do simulations
easily with the Culgi Library. After the analysis of the users and their characteristics in the first two
months, we decided to make a graphical programming environment (the Culgi GPE in short) in which
users can generate Culgi simulation programs by clicking, dragging and dropping. Then in the
following months, we designed and developed a prototype for the Culgi GPE. Within this prototype,
users can make a simulation program much easier than in the traditional way. I am happy that the
customers and the users like this prototype.
I am very grateful to all of my supervisors: Prof. Hans Fraaije, Frits Post, Gerwin de Haan and Agur
Sevink. They helped me a lot from the very beginning to the end of this project. What I learned from
their suggestions are not only on how to design the Culgi GPE, but also on how to think, how to
analyze, and how to present. I believe that what I learned from my supervisors will make me perform
better in my future.
Meanwhile, thanks Charl Botha in the Graphics & CAD CAM Group in TU Delft. He showed me his
system DeVIDE, and gave some very good suggestions on how to design and how to implement the
system. Thanks to all the colleagues of Culgi. Their feedback of the prototype made me improve this
prototype a lot. Thanks to all the friends in the Soft Condensed Matter Group in Leiden University.
