1 200 year fascination of the Jungfrau
The first ascent of the Jungfrau, the first of Switzerland’s peaks of over 4000 metres, on 3
August 1811 caused quite a sensation. In those days the area in today’s UNESCO Region was
strictly reserved for a few daring adventurers. These days, thanks to the mountain railways,
footpaths and biking trails everyone can experience a variety of adventures in the Jungfrau
Region.
Exactly 200 years after the first ascent, professional alpinists and mountain guides from
Lauterbrunnen will climb the Jungfrau dressed in historic clothing and jubilee celebrations will take
place in Wengen in the evening. With their climbing of the Jungfrau, the adventurous Meyer brothers
from Aarau were also the first to explore and chart the Bernese Alps. Several decades later, the great
run to conquer the Alpine peaks commenced and tourism began to flourish. Grindelwald, Mürren,
Wengen and Lauterbrunnen developed into popular tourist resorts.
Jungfrau Mountain Arena accessible to everyone
The mountains in the Jungfrau Region continue to hold a great fascination and, in the meantime, offer
something to suit everyone from action-seeking sports enthusiasts to aficionados looking for
relaxation. A trip to the Jungfraujoch, Europe’s highest train station at 3453 metres above sea level,
transports visitors into the magical world of eternal snow and ice. From the opposite side of the valley
above Mürren, on the top of the almost 3000 metre-high Schilthorn, day-trippers can enjoy the best
views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau triumvirate. Far below in the Lauterbrunnen valley the
spectacular Trümmelbachfalls have been open to visitors for around 100 years. Here 20,000 litres of
water per second thunder down into the “valley of 72 waterfalls“.
2 Imperial experiences against a regal backdrop
Experience unforgettable holidays in unspoilt surroundings against the backdrop of the Eiger, Mönch
and Jungfrau:
Amazing experiences – Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn
A trip to Europe’s highest railway station, the Jungfraujoch located at 3454 metres, is the highlight of
every trip to Switzerland. 365 days a year the rack railway leaves Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen for
Kleine Scheidegg, the alpine railway station at the foot of the famous Eiger north face. The onward
journey to the Jungfraujoch leads through the Eiger and Mönch and, on the two intermediate stops
offers fascinating views from the middle of the Eiger north face down to Grindelwald and the Eismeer.
From the 2970 metre-high Schilthorn the view from the 360°C rotating panorama restaurant of over
200 alpine peaks is fascinating.
Powerful – In the valley of 72 Waterfalls
The Lauterbrunnen valley is probably the most impressive glaciated valley in the Alps. No less than 72
waterfalls plummet to the valley over the steep rock walls carved by the glacier. Lauterbrunnen’s
trademark, the 300 metre-high Staubbachfall inspired Goethe zu write his poem “Spirits over the
waters“. The Trümmelbachfalls, comprising ten glacial waterfalls within the rock, are unique in Europe.
The Trümmelbach alone drains the gigantic glacial walls of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau with up to
20‘000 litres of water per second.
Cross country - Walking
The Jungfrau Region offers the ultimate in walking pleasure. Over 500 kilometres of signed footpaths
offer walking enthusiasts a varied playground – from easy paths suitable for prams to adventure trails
and challenging mountainous paths and via ferrata. The many adventure trails with barbecue sites are
very popular with families, as are the overnight stays in a SAC mountain hut. There are good-value lift
passes for walkers, making exploration of the Jungfrau Region using lifts and railways considerably
easier.
Until the brakes run hot – Mountain biking
160 kilometres of signed mountain bike trails extend over the spectacular scenery of the Jungfrau
Region. There is a tour suitable for all levels of ability – from simple to extreme, from leisurely to
athletic, from family circuit to 88-kilometre marathon tour. In Grindelwald cyclists can stay in one of the
four bike hotels, all of which are equipped accordingly. Naturally, these also offer the corresponding
wellness complex in which to relax. Qualified bike guides take you to the most beautiful corners of the
region and give participants all kinds of tips and tricks on the subject of “exploring on 2 wheels”.
Close to heaven - Mountaineering
To stand on the summit for once in your life – surrounding you the snow-capped mountains, far below
the villages. The Mönch is regarded as one of the easiest peaks of over 4000 metres in the Alps and
can easily be reached relatively easily from the Jungfraujoch. The guided walks on the glacier and an
overnight stay in the Konkordia hut are a very special experience. To stand in the middle of the
Aletsch glacier – at 23 kilometres the longest in the Alps – and admire the surrounding high-alpine
world of glaciers is certain to take one’s breathe away. Local guides know the area like the back of
their hand and lead even mountaineering novices safely through the UNESCO World Natural Heritage
Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch.
Experience real culture - Folklore
The century-old craft of lace-making is still practised by the local ladies in the Lauterbrunnen valley.
Thousands of threads wound around a wooden stick are skilfully turned into lace and covers. In
Grindelwald, however, one shows great pride in wood craft: The „velogemel“– a wooden bicycle that
was invented 100 years ago – is to this day still made by hand. Traditional folk dances, flag throwing
and folk music are an integral part of the Jungfrau Region. In June every year the Spring in the
Mountains Festival takes place on Männlichen – in front of the most beautiful backdrop of Eiger,
Mönch and Jungfrau.
Building dams and building piles of stones – Families
Cooking at the various barbecue sites, serious scrambling in rock, swimming in crystal clear mountain
lakes, watching animals and falling into bed, tired but happy, in a mountain hut – the Jungfrau Region
offers a variety of adventures for families. Various different theme paths are specially designed for
families with children. At Bort above Grindelwald there is a new alpine playground with climbing and
balancing frames, trampolines, slides and swings. Furthermore, there is a stream to play in and on
Wednesdays fairytales are told to enchant children.
3 Grindelwald
The lively Eiger village
The lively holiday resort at the foot of the Eiger is closely linked with mountaineering. Time and
time again top alpinists have continued to cause a sensation in the Eiger north face, but
Grindelwald also offers a variety of possibilities for those seeking active recovery.
The famous resort in the Jungfrau Region lies embedded in untouched and unique alpine scenery at
the foot of the Eiger north face. It is the diversity of the village in the middle of the intact mountain
world that makes it so captivating: the possibilities for outdoor activities such as walking, biking, Nordic
walking, climbing, tennis and golf offer you active recovery, railway excursions to the Jungfraujoch –
Europe’s highest railway station – as well as cable car rides to First and nearby Bachalpsee or
Pfingstegg above Grindelwald will fascinate you. Cultural and sporting events such as the LandArt
Festival, Eiger Live mountaineering week or the Eiger Bike Challenge round off the colourful array on
offer.
Grindelwald has something to offer everyone. The village is lively, sporty and active, but as a contrast
also offers secluded, idyllic corners to savour and linger.
Tip: Walk from Pfingstegg to the Baeregg hut with the Jungfrau Climate Guide on an iPhone.
4 Wengen
The classical, car-free holiday resort at the foot of the Jungfrau
Steeped in tradition and spoilt by the sunshine, the cure resort at the foot of the Jungfrau
invites you to come and stay. An excursion to the Jungfraujoch, Europe’s highest railway
station, lies on your doorstep and the Lauberhorn Trail allows you to experience the World Cup
Ski Race on foot.
Wengen is famous throughout the world for winter sports and winter sports icons. Karl Molitor, inventor
of ski boots with buckles, was born in Wengen. With his eleven victories at the Lauberhorn Downhill
Race and two medals at the Olympic Games in St. Moritz in 1948, he remains the most successful
skier in the over 80-year history of the Lauberhorn Races. However, Wengen with its friendly character
does not lack appeal in summer either. The Wengen – Männlichen cable car and the Wengeneralp
railway to Kleine Scheidegg and on to the Jungfraujoch make it easy to do excursions on foot or on
two wheels.
Every year in September the world‘s most beautiful marathon, the Jungfrau Marathon, passes through
the village. The fantastic mountain backdrop accompanies the 4000 participants on their way from
Interlaken via Lauterbrunnen and Wengen up to the Kleine Scheidegg. Besides the 42,195 kilometres,
there is a climb of 2,000 metres to be negotiated.
Tip: Visit the Mendelssohn Musik Week in Wengen taking place from 20 – 27 August 2011.
5 Mürren
The car-free and traditional alpine village at the foot of the Schilthorn
«My name is Bond, James Bond». The foolhardy agent has made a substantial contribution to
the worldwide renown of the Schilthorn. The mountain with its fantastic circular view is one of
the highlights of the Jungfrau Region. At the foot of the Schilthorn though, the village of
Mürren has maintained its authentic character.
Mürren is an intact mountain village with a great history. It was here that the aristocrats stayed and
enjoyed the “cool summer freshness” during the summer months, and here that the English brought
skiing and the world’s craziest ski race in the world, the Inferno, into being.
The former Walser settlement, a fact which is reflected in the style of the houses and the dialect of the
people of Mürren, offers both the active nature-lover and those seeking peace and quiet much
originality. The area can be explored on the countless footpaths, excursions to the Schilthorn or a
family outing to the Allmendhubel round off the offer.
In the 1960s the James Bond film «On her Majesty’s Secret Service» was filmed on the 2,970 metre-
high Schilthorn. The filming brought two different worlds together – the world of Hollywood and that of
the rural folk of Mürren. To this day the locals take great joy in recounting anecdotes of those days,
and it is thanks to James Bond that the construction of the cable car and rotating restaurant was
completed.
Tip: A James Bond breakfast on the Schilthorn whilst savouring the 360° panorama of over 200
mountain peaks from the rotating restaurant.
6 Lauterbrunnen
In the valley of 72 waterfalls
Here the highest and most spectacular waterfalls plummet to the valley. The Staubbachfall,
Lauterbrunnen’s landmark inspired Goethe to write a poem.
There are a total of 72 waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen valley, the most impressive and beautiful can
be found between Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg. Goethe was so inspired by the almost 300-metre
high Staubbachfall that he wrote the peom «Spirits over the waters».
Lauterbrunnen is the ideal departure point for outings in the entire Jungfrau Region. By train of by car
the village is a mere 15 minutes from Interlaken. Camping enthusiasts will find beautifully located
campsites close to the village and backpackers from all over the world gather here.
On a cultural level the village offers living tradition. The centry-old craft of lace making is still carried
out my local women today. Thousands of threads wound around a wooden stick are skilfully
transformed into lace and covers. In the Lauterbrunnen Talmuseum there are several objects that
used to be used by farming families. Even a hotel room dating from the beginnings of tourism in the
19th Century is on display.
Tip: At the Staubbachfall a gallery leads up to the rock face and near the water one can feel the
Gischt that, according to experts in strength places, radiates positive energies.
7 Isenfluh
The idyllic mountain village with the fabulous views and powerful paths
Many a legend is told in this small farming village situated above Lauterbrunnen. It lies away
from the main stream of tourists and has to this day maintained its originality.
The road to Isenfluh is narrow and winds its way high up in a series of corners and includes a tunnel
that makes a 360° turn within the mountain. The old road was covered by a landslide at the beginning
of the 1990s, leaving Isenfluh accessible merely by chairlift for a certain time. Perhaps this is why the
tranquil village has maintained its originality.
Nature, legend and strength places – the theme path of the same name leading from Isenfluh via Alp
Sulwald to the Suls-Lobhorn hut takes you past strength places and heightens your perception of the
natural surroundings. Standing at the edge of the precipice, high above the Lauterbrunnen valley with
the Lütschine river far down below, the legend of the „Haagenmanndli“ is told. He is said to have used
his hook to pull children down over the rock wall should they have been standing too close to the
edge.
In contrast to the other villages in the Jungfrau Region, a different dialect is spoken here. Whereas
Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren and Lauterbrunnen were originally settled by the Walser people, the
dialect in Isenfluh shows influences from the northern side.
Tip: A«Sulwaldkaffi» and «Hasli-Chöche» in the Sulwaldstübli.
8 Gimmelwald
Peace and authentic alpine culture in front of a grand backdrop
So much care and attention has been paid to the decoration of the facades of the chalets that
this small alpine farming village could be part of a museum. The village is located half-way up
to Mürren and is a prime example of the power and beauty of the glaciated mountains.
The idyllic mountain village is situated half-way between Stechelberg and Mürren, after the first
section of the Schilthorn cable car up the steep rock walls. Those staying here are so close to the
grand backdrop of the north faces of the Bernese Alps that it virtually takes your breath away. Walks
to Tanzbödeli, to Mürren and the Schilthorn, or the hutting tour through “Hintere Gasse” to Kandersteg
start here.
It is just the right place for families and guests not looking for great luxury.
Tip: Try the via ferrata from Müren to Gimmelwald and enjoy the spectacular views into the
Lauterbrunnen valley and a Nepalese bridge as the grand finale.
9 Stechelberg
The gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch
The last village in the Lauterbrunnen valley is a scattered settlement where those seeking
peace can rest in the midst of tremendous natural surroundings and rural farming life. One can
hardly believe that a fabulous natural spectacle – the Trümmelbachfalls – is waiting just around
the corner.
Stechelberg is the gateway to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. In
the upper Lauterbrunnen valley nature still has all the space in the world – waterfalls such as the multi-
level Schmadribachfall or the Oberhornsee close to the glacier heighten the impact of the almost
untouched landscape. However, traces of mankind can still be found: such as at Läger – a former
alpine pasture – or at Trachsellauenen, where the remains of the furnaces from the days of ore mining
can be seen. Candle hotels located in the middle of this alpine landscape tempt walkers to come in
and spend a night in these impressive surroundings and admire the sunrise in the mountains.
Hidden within the mountain not far from the village of Stechelberg, the Trümmelbachfalls can be
found. Unique in Europe, the Trümmelbach alone drains the gigantic glacial walls of the Eiger, Mönch
and Jungfrau with up to 20,000 litres of water per second.
Tip: A night in the Obersteinberg candle hotel or the Berghotel Tschingelhorn in the UNESCO World
Natural Heritage.
12 Jungfrau Region Tourism Organisation
Since 01.01.2008 Jungfrau Region Marketing AG (JRM AG) has been responsible for marketing the
destination. The local tourist offices of Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren, Lauterbrunnen, Stechelberg and
Gimmelwald have outsourced the marketing to JRM AG.
It is JRM AG’s chief task to market the tourist destinations to defined target groups using suitable
marketing instruments. A further important duty lies in the administration of central elements such as
IT and human resources or the task of coordination for the entire tourist destination.
Targets
The organizations main target is to optimize the capacity of beds in hotels, holiday apartments and
other accommodations. The Jungfrau Region depends to more than 95% of the tourism branch and
needs added value. To reach the targets, we focus on different target groups in the B2B and B2C
Business.
Finances
JRM AG is financed on one side by revenue from the Tourism Promotion Contribution, the cantonal
lodging fee and through service agreements, on the other side by various proceeds from JRM AG.
The local tourist offices, the transport companies and the municipalities of Grindelwald and
Lauterbrunnen are shareholders of JRM AG. The organization counts 14 employees and four trainees.
