7 Isenfluh
The idyllic mountain village with the fabulous views and powerful paths
Many a legend is told in this small farming village situated above Lauterbrunnen. It lies away
from the main stream of tourists and has to this day maintained its originality.
The road to Isenfluh is narrow and winds its way high up in a series of corners and includes a tunnel
that makes a 360° turn within the mountain. The old road was covered by a landslide at the beginning
of the 1990s, leaving Isenfluh accessible merely by chairlift for a certain time. Perhaps this is why the
tranquil village has maintained its originality.
Nature, legend and strength places – the theme path of the same name leading from Isenfluh via Alp
Sulwald to the Suls-Lobhorn hut takes you past strength places and heightens your perception of the
natural surroundings. Standing at the edge of the precipice, high above the Lauterbrunnen valley with
the Lütschine river far down below, the legend of the „Haagenmanndli“ is told. He is said to have used
his hook to pull children down over the rock wall should they have been standing too close to the
edge.
In contrast to the other villages in the Jungfrau Region, a different dialect is spoken here. Whereas
Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren and Lauterbrunnen were originally settled by the Walser people, the
dialect in Isenfluh shows influences from the northern side.
