The gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch
The last village in the Lauterbrunnen valley is a scattered settlement where those seeking
peace can rest in the midst of tremendous natural surroundings and rural farming life. One can
hardly believe that a fabulous natural spectacle – the Trümmelbachfalls – is waiting just around
the corner.
Stechelberg is the gateway to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. In
the upper Lauterbrunnen valley nature still has all the space in the world – waterfalls such as the multi-
level Schmadribachfall or the Oberhornsee close to the glacier heighten the impact of the almost
untouched landscape. However, traces of mankind can still be found: such as at Läger – a former
alpine pasture – or at Trachsellauenen, where the remains of the furnaces from the days of ore mining
can be seen. Candle hotels located in the middle of this alpine landscape tempt walkers to come in
and spend a night in these impressive surroundings and admire the sunrise in the mountains.
Hidden within the mountain not far from the village of Stechelberg, the Trümmelbachfalls can be
found. Unique in Europe, the Trümmelbach alone drains the gigantic glacial walls of the Eiger, Mönch
and Jungfrau with up to 20,000 litres of water per second.
