1 200 year fascination of the <strong>Jungfrau</strong><br />

The first ascent of the <strong>Jungfrau</strong>, the first of Switzerland’s peaks of over 4000 metres, on 3<br />

August 1811 caused quite a sensation. In those days the area in today’s UNESCO <strong>Region</strong> was<br />

strictly reserved for a few daring adventurers. These days, thanks to the mountain railways,<br />

footpaths and biking trails everyone can experience a variety of adventures in the <strong>Jungfrau</strong><br />

<strong>Region</strong>.<br />

Exactly 200 years after the first ascent, professional alpinists and mountain guides from<br />

Lauterbrunnen will climb the <strong>Jungfrau</strong> dressed in historic clothing and jubilee celebrations will take<br />

place in Wengen in the evening. With their climbing of the <strong>Jungfrau</strong>, the adventurous Meyer brothers<br />

from Aarau were also the first to explore and chart the Bernese Alps. Several decades later, the great<br />

run to conquer the Alpine peaks commenced and tourism began to flourish. Grindelwald, Mürren,<br />

Wengen and Lauterbrunnen developed into popular tourist resorts.<br />

<strong>Jungfrau</strong> Mountain Arena accessible to everyone<br />

The mountains in the <strong>Jungfrau</strong> <strong>Region</strong> continue to hold a great fascination and, in the meantime, offer<br />

something to suit everyone from action-seeking sports enthusiasts to aficionados looking for<br />

relaxation. A trip to the <strong>Jungfrau</strong>joch, Europe’s highest train station at 3453 metres above sea level,<br />

transports visitors into the magical world of eternal snow and ice. From the opposite side of the valley<br />

above Mürren, on the top of the almost 3000 metre-high Schilthorn, day-trippers can enjoy the best<br />

views of the Eiger, Mönch and <strong>Jungfrau</strong> triumvirate. Far below in the Lauterbrunnen valley the<br />

spectacular Trümmelbachfalls have been open to visitors for around 100 years. Here 20,000 litres of<br />

water per second thunder down into the “valley of 72 waterfalls“.<br />
