1 200 year fascination of the Jungfrau
The first ascent of the Jungfrau, the first of Switzerland’s peaks of over 4000 metres, on 3
August 1811 caused quite a sensation. In those days the area in today’s UNESCO Region was
strictly reserved for a few daring adventurers. These days, thanks to the mountain railways,
footpaths and biking trails everyone can experience a variety of adventures in the Jungfrau
Region.
Exactly 200 years after the first ascent, professional alpinists and mountain guides from
Lauterbrunnen will climb the Jungfrau dressed in historic clothing and jubilee celebrations will take
place in Wengen in the evening. With their climbing of the Jungfrau, the adventurous Meyer brothers
from Aarau were also the first to explore and chart the Bernese Alps. Several decades later, the great
run to conquer the Alpine peaks commenced and tourism began to flourish. Grindelwald, Mürren,
Wengen and Lauterbrunnen developed into popular tourist resorts.
Jungfrau Mountain Arena accessible to everyone
The mountains in the Jungfrau Region continue to hold a great fascination and, in the meantime, offer
something to suit everyone from action-seeking sports enthusiasts to aficionados looking for
relaxation. A trip to the Jungfraujoch, Europe’s highest train station at 3453 metres above sea level,
transports visitors into the magical world of eternal snow and ice. From the opposite side of the valley
above Mürren, on the top of the almost 3000 metre-high Schilthorn, day-trippers can enjoy the best
views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau triumvirate. Far below in the Lauterbrunnen valley the
spectacular Trümmelbachfalls have been open to visitors for around 100 years. Here 20,000 litres of
water per second thunder down into the “valley of 72 waterfalls“.
