Reading Connection Tips for Success
Story time – Parents, do you want to spend time with your children, help them build reading skills, and
help them learn to love books? Here are some suggestions:
Read regularly. Try to read to your child every day for 10-15 minutes at bedtime for a peaceful end to
the day. While dinner is cooking read aloud if possible. Or curl up together with a book. Take turns
choosing books. Your children may have their favorite books, but use your turn for new titles and a
variety. Let your children participate. Ask your child to turn the pages while you read. Also, the
child can finish sentences that rhyme or fill in words. Go slowly so that your child understands the story
and looks at the pictures. Children enjoy read-aloud time more if they are involved. Be Playful. You can
use different voices for different characters. You don’t have to be an expert reader- your child will love it when you
read aloud because it’s you.

Math Connection – Math at the grocery store
Need to go food shopping? Why not take your children so that this experience can be a practice for what
they are learning in Math at school. Here are some suggestions: Weigh and multiply. Fruits and
vegetables are sold by the pound. Ask your children to try and compute how much your produce will cost.
Comparison Shop. Let your child help you save money and learn to be a better shopper. Ask your
children to look for the best deal, so you can save money buying groceries. Estimate the total. As you
put groceries in your cart, ask your child to predict what your total bill will cost. With each item, your
child should check the price and round it up to the nearest dollar. At checkout time, see how well your
child did, and acknowledge with a job well done.
Utah Food Bank
The Mobile Pantry will be at Riley delivering food. This program is for the Riley School Community.
Examples of items include yogurt, produce and cereal. Items will vary. Participants must bring: One
proof of address in the 84104 zip code: driver’s license, report card, bill, etc. and three bags to carry food
home (baskets and wagons work too). See enclosed flyer.
Uniform Policy
Reminder: The Riley Dress Code was designed to be as easy and inexpensive as possible for parents.
Please remind your students to remember to keep the dress code colors. It is expected that ALL students
will comply with the dress code policy.
School Community Council
The SCC met in February to review the current year’s School Improvement Plan, in preparation for work
on the 2012-2013 Plan. The Council was presented with a draft of the Plan for their feedback and
recommendations, allowing parents to make decisions about school achievement and progress.
