Math folding Tips for Success
Parents, try helping your children learn how to fold a piece of paper in half. They will find out with this
surprising activity. Give your children a piece of notebook paper, and ask them how to predict how many
times they can fold it in half. Then, have them fold the paper in half again and again until it won’t fold
anymore. Your children will discover that they can’t fold it more than 6 times. Have your children try
different sizes and types of paper (tissue, paper towels, newspaper). No matter the size or type of paper,
your children won’t be able to fold it more than 6, 7 or 8 times. Ask your child if they know why? It has to
do with doubling-the first time they fold, they will have 2 layers, then 4 layers, and so on…until 8 folds =
256 layers. The paper becomes too thick to fold again.
TEACHER FEATURES
My name is Jenny Yates and I teach first grade. I moved to Utah last September after
completing my Master’s in Teaching program at the University of Washington in Seattle. As an
avid skier I was very excited to experience what the Wasatch had to offer. Even with the low
snow year I was able to spend nearly every winter weekend with my fiancé in the backcountry
up Big Cottonwood Canyon. Recently we got a new dog. His name is Niko and he is a
handsome 100-pound Malamute/Pyrenees mix. The three of us like to be outside whenever
possible. I feel very fortunate that I was able to spend time at Riley this year! There are so many
fantastic people here and my students make me smile every day!
Christy Smith is our School Counseling intern from Utah State University. She received her
Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of Utah. Her two children are seven and
five, and she enjoys doing anything outside with her family from hiking, to rollerblading, to
camping, to just playing at the park. She has loved all the experiences she has had working
with your children at Riley and will miss them all when she graduates this May. She is excited
to begin a new adventure with her family this summer as they move to Colorado Springs. She
wants to thank everyone at Riley for making this year such a wonderful experience for her!
