waste through land fills. ‘Waste to Energy’ projects will be<br />
established wherever possible. A ‘Waste to Energy’ project at<br />
a cost of Rs.55 crores is under implementation in Tirunelveli<br />
Corporation. As directed by our Hon’ble Chief Minister, a<br />
special Solid Waste Management Fund will be<br />
constituted with a sum of Rs.100 crores for financing<br />
projects in weak urban local bodies during <strong>2013</strong>-20<strong>14</strong>.<br />
121. This Government is giving special priority to the<br />
implementation of proper waste water management in urban<br />
local bodies. Out of the 42 urban local bodies annexed to<br />
Chennai City, only two viz., Valasaravakkam and Alandur are<br />
have sewerage systems. In 13 erstwhile urban local bodies,<br />
sewerage works are in progress. In other areas, sewerage<br />
works will be taken up in the coming years. Similarly, in 22<br />
Municipalities, sewerage works worth Rs.870.63 crores are<br />
under implementation by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and<br />
Drainage (TWAD) Board. Special priority will be given to<br />
taking up tertiary treatment and recycling sewage water for<br />
industrial use, especially in and around Chennai. This<br />
Government has prepared a massive plan for establishing<br />
Under Ground Sewerage System (UGSS) for various<br />
Municipalities and Town Panchayats. It is proposed to take up<br />
these projects in a phased manner using the funds available<br />
under the State Mission Mode Programmes and JNNURM-II.<br />
122. This Government has launched a scheme for<br />
eradicating open defecation in the urban areas from<br />
2011-2012. An amount of Rs.19.83 crores was spent to<br />
improve 2,484 toilets, besides constructing 1,769 new toilets.
