Since starting <strong>the</strong> programme in 2005, <strong>the</strong> greenhouse<br />

gas emissions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> companies involved in NISP were reduced<br />

by 5.2 million tons. At <strong>the</strong> same time, approximately<br />

3.8 million tons <strong>of</strong> waste <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se companies were led back<br />

into <strong>the</strong> material cycle instead <strong>of</strong> dumping <strong>the</strong>m. In addition,<br />

<strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> wastewater was reduced by approximately<br />

9.4 million tons.<br />

Barriers and Risks<br />

Considering <strong>the</strong> fact that NISP is a strategic approach, it<br />

has limited direct risks. However, when evaluating ecological<br />

saving effects on company level, rebound effects might<br />

occur, for example, resulting from longer transportation<br />

distances. Therefore, a standardised, integrated evaluation<br />

process should take place. Since not only environmental<br />

but also economic aspects are considered here, companies<br />

might focus on economic aspects instead <strong>of</strong> choosing <strong>the</strong><br />

best solution for <strong>the</strong> environment. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong> risk to<br />

disclose sensitive business data could be opposed to a successful<br />

partnership.<br />

Potentials<br />

The NISP programme registers an enormous increase,<br />

10,000 members were attracted within approximately five<br />

years. The benefits are obvious. The participating companies<br />

realised an additional turnover <strong>of</strong> 151 million Pounds<br />

so far. Additionally, around 131 million Pounds were saved<br />

in costs through efficient raw material use and synergies.<br />

The efficiency increase did not happen at <strong>the</strong> expense <strong>of</strong><br />

jobs – quite <strong>the</strong> contrary: a total <strong>of</strong> 800 new jobs were created<br />

and over 1,200 jobs secured on a long-term basis.<br />
