In addition we will take a closer look at the use of the progressive, the gerund vs. infinitive, conditional clauses and ways of expressing past and future time. Assessment/requirements: active participation and written end-of-term test. 050 690 Versteegen Grammar AM, 3 CP Gruppe C: mi 10-12 GABF 04/614 Süd The aim of the course is to give students a fine-tuning of their grammatical skills and knowledge. Special attention will be given to the English verb system, prepositions and word order, especially the position of adverbial phrases. Students will be expected to present selected grammatical topics individually, using appropriate visual aids such as diagrams, OHP transparencies, or Powerpoint. Assessment/requirements: active participation, presentation and short tests during the semester.
050 691 Zucker Communication AM, 3 CP Gruppe A: 2 st. mo 16-18 GB 02/160 Gruppe B: 2 st. mi 14-16 GABF 04/253 Nord The essay serves two important functions during your studies of English: On the one hand, it is a popular assignment in written course exams; on the other hand, the principles behind a good essay are applicable to any number of text types, academic or journalistic. Building on a number of aspects covered in your “Academic Skills“ class, this Übung will thus focus on enhancing your essay writing skills. After an introduction to strategies of argumentation (and a discussion of its negative flipside: logical and argumentative fallacies), the class will highlight certain controversial issues from political, cultural and academic fields that will serve as the basis of structured discussion, partly in class, partly in the form of essay exercises. Assessment/requirements: two short essays during the semester: one prepared at home, one written in an exam situation. 050 691 McColl Communication AM, 3 CP Gruppe C: 2 st. do 12-14 GB 5/37 Nord Gruppe D: 2 st. do 16-18 GABF 04/613 Süd This Übung is about exactly that: practice. Students will have the chance to hone their written skills through a series of assignments on various topics, and will be expected to share their results with fellow participants. Centring upon academic writing in particular, this course pays particular attention to economy of expression and the foregrounding of argument, both on a local and large scale. Through exercises in rephrasing, paraphrasing and synopsis, we will question which information is most relevant in any given text, while keeping an eye out for fallacies, mixed metaphors and unnecessary ambiguities. There will also be an oral component to the course. Participants will be expected to give a speech before the class. Assessment/requirements: various written assignments and oral presentation.
