Sexual dimorphism: Sexes are externally similar.<br />

Distribution: Reported in Europe, Japan, and North America. In Canada the<br />

species has been collected in New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, and Manitoba.<br />

Economic importance: As discussed for the family.<br />

Dienerella filiformis (Gyllenhal)<br />

Diagnosis: The species is superficially similar to D. costulata but differs mainly<br />

in having the third, fifth, and seventh elytral intervals flat and 7 rows of punctures<br />

on the posterior half of each elytron, the fifth and sixth being coalescent<br />

near the middle.<br />

Sexual dimorphism: Sexes are externally similar.<br />

Distribution: Recorded in Europe, Japan, and North America; possibly established<br />

in New Zealand (Archibald and Chalmers 1983). In Canada the species<br />

has been collected in Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Manitoba, Saskatchewan,<br />

and Alberta.<br />

Economic importance: As stated for the family. Dienerella filiformis appears to<br />

be the most common species of Dienerella in granaries and grain elevators in the<br />

Prairie Provinces.<br />

Dienerella filum (Aubé)<br />

Diagnosis: The species differs from the other Dienerella included here in having<br />

a 2-segmented antennal club, the head with a median, longitudinal impression<br />

and the pronotum with a broad, median, oval depression on the anterior half.<br />

Sexual dimorphism: Sexes are externally similar.<br />

Distribution: Reported in Europe, North Africa, and the New World. In<br />

Canada the species occurs in the temperate regions from Quebec west to<br />

British Columbia.<br />

Economic importance: As stated for the family. The species has recently<br />

been reported as a potential pest of air-conditioning and refrigeration systems<br />

(Carlton 1988).<br />

Dienerella ruficollis (Marsham)<br />

Diagnosis: Among the species of Dienerella occurring in Canada, D. ruficollis is<br />
