pubescence The short closely set hairs covering an area.<br />

puncture A minute impression of the integument.<br />

scutellum A more or less triangular sclerite in the middle of the base of the<br />

serrate Used in reference to an antenna in which some of the segments are<br />

sinuate Having the margin curved or wavy.<br />

spiniform In the shape of a spine.<br />

spot A small area on the integument of different coloration than the surrounding<br />

area.<br />

stria (pl. striae) A fine, longitudinal impressed line in the elytral integument,<br />

between two intervals, sometimes represented only by punctures<br />

(Fig. 270).<br />

strial Related to the striae.<br />

striated With striae.<br />

suberect Used in reference to setae that are not completely upright.<br />

sulcus (pl. sulci) An impressed line.<br />

suture The median line where the elytra meet (Fig. 270).<br />

tarsus (pl. tarsi) The last part of the leg, consisting of segments and attached<br />

to the tibia (Fig. 271).<br />

temple (pl. tempora) The area of the head behind the eye (te, Fig. 109).<br />

thorax The second and median division of the insect body consisting of three<br />

segments—prothorax, mesothorax, and metathorax.<br />

tibia (pl. tibiae) The fourth segment of the leg between the femur and the<br />

tarsus (Fig. 271).<br />

trochanter The second segment of the leg between the coxa and the femur<br />

(Fig. 271).<br />

vestiture The structures, such as hairs and scales, covering the integument.<br />

wing The organ of flight located under each elytron.<br />
