2.1. Dacian Basin paleogeographic evolution: its beginnings, development and filling
named Siret-Bug Land by Popov et al. (2004) rose to the north of the Dacian Basin.
As a result of these paleogeographic changes the connection between the Dacian
and Euxinian basins was severely limited. Dacian Basin became a semi-closed water
body (Jipa, Olteanu, 2005). Communication with the Euxinian Basin took place
through a seaway located to the north of the present location of the town of Galaţi
(named the “Galaţi passage” by Saulea et al., 1969 and by Marinescu, Papaianopol,
1989). This paleogeography setting is shown in the Maeotian paleogeographical
map of Hamor et al.,1988), as well as in the paleogeographic map of Ilyna et al. (in
Popov et al., 2004).
