<strong>NCAA</strong> First and Second Rounds at Miami • <strong>May</strong> 9-10, <strong>2008</strong><br />

Women’s tennis advances to their ninth consecutive<br />

Northeast Conference Championship, winning for the<br />

fifth consecutive time. The title ties the Bobcats with the<br />

<strong>University</strong> of Maryland-Baltimore County for secondmost<br />

in conference history. <strong>Quinnipiac</strong> will advance to<br />

the <strong>NCAA</strong> Tournament, set to begin on <strong>May</strong> 9.<br />

April 22: Golf junior Jayson Loranger ties for 9th overall<br />

at the Peacock Invitational hosted by St. Peter’s College.<br />

Men’s outdoor track senior Jacob Gurzler won the 1500<br />

Meter race at the College of Holy Cross Track Meet. Jack<br />

McDonald also finished 3rd in the race.<br />

April 24: Women’s lacrosse takes three of the four major<br />

awards at the annual NEC Women’s Lacrosse Banquet,<br />

hosted by <strong>Quinnipiac</strong> at the TD Banknorth Sports Center.<br />

Head coach Danie Caro was named Coach of the Year,<br />

junior Tiffany Manzi was named Player of the Year and<br />

junior Hannah Nelson was named Defensive Player of the<br />

Year.<br />

April 25: Women’s lacrosse wins their NEC Tournament<br />

Semifinal match-up over Mount St. Mary’s, 12-11, to advance<br />

to the NEC Championship game. Katie Latonick’s<br />

goal with 3:46, on a pass from Kelly Bruneau, was the<br />

game-winner.<br />

Baseball downs Long Island, 5-4, on a walk-off single by<br />

freshman Mike Bartlett that drove in two runs to win the<br />

game in the bottom of the 9th. Earlier in the game, Brian<br />

Monack robs a homerun and topples over the fence at<br />

Bobcat Field for the “BobCatch”. The highlight, captured<br />

by student cameramen Sam Friedman and Justin Cohen,<br />

is the top play on WTNH 8, Fox 61 and NBC 30.<br />

April 26: The men’s golf team ties for 3rd out of 10 teams<br />

at the Northeast Invitational at the Green Valley Golf<br />

Course hosted by the <strong>University</strong> of Rhode Island. Brady<br />

Giroux tied for 4th place with a two-day score of 146 (68-<br />

78).<br />

Men’s lacrosse beats Bellarmine, 6-5, to clinch a Great<br />

Western Lacrosse League Tournament berth. Kevin Benzing<br />

stopped 15 shots in the win.<br />

April 28: Men’s lacrosse junior Gary Messina and women’s<br />

lacrosse junior Tiffany Manzi were named the Eli’s<br />

Restaurant/<strong>Quinnipiac</strong> Athletics March Athletes of the<br />

Month.<br />

April 29: Monack’s “BobCatch” is featured as the top<br />

play on ESPN’s SportsCenter.<br />

April 30: Baseball’s Brian Monack appears on ESPN First<br />

Take with Dana Jacobson and Jay Crawford to discuss his<br />

homerun-robbing catch against Long Island.<br />

April Athletes Of The Month.<br />

<strong>May</strong> 1: Baseball’s Brian Monack’s “BobCatch” is the top<br />

play on NBC 30 Sports’ “Kevin’s 7”.<br />

The <strong>Quinnipiac</strong> men’s tennis team placed five players on<br />

the All-Northeast Conference team. Joe Nuara earned a<br />

first-team selection at No. 6 singles.Brian Mikkelson and<br />

Sean Pease each took second-team honors at the No. 2 and<br />

No. 3 singles flights, respectively. They also paired to earn<br />

Second-Team All-NEC at No. 1 doubles. John Hughes Scott<br />

Salway also paired to win Second-Team All-NEC honors at<br />

No. 2 doubles.<br />

Men’s lacrosse head coach Eric Fekete is named the Great<br />

Western Lacrosse League Coach of the Year while Drew<br />

Maceranka was named to the All-GWLL Second Team.<br />

<strong>May</strong> 4: Women’s outdoor track’s Chelsea Bollerman and<br />

Abbey Gosling each take home an NEC Individual Championship.<br />

Bollerman won the 1500 Meter race and finished<br />

2nd in the 800 Meter race. Gosling won 3,000 Meter Steeple<br />

Chase and finished 2nd in the 5,000 Meter race. Both runners<br />

qualified for the <strong>NCAA</strong> Regional to be held at Florida<br />

State <strong>University</strong>.<br />
