Action and indigenous use of the plant: The extracts of the above have been<br />
reported to have shown hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) properties. The fruits<br />
leaves and roots of Momordica charantia have been long used in India as a<br />
traditional remedy for diabetes mellitus. The leaves of Gymnema sylvestre are<br />
useful in the management of maturity onset diabetes and are an important<br />
ingredient in ayurvedic formulation for diabetes. (Ref: 1. Wealth of India, Vol<br />

Modern use in the patent: A patent has been granted on edible herbal<br />
compositions, comprising mixtures of at least 2 herbs selected from the above<br />
plants useful as hypoglycemic agents. The patent was granted to Cromak Research<br />
Inc. (US Patent 5,900,240).<br />
