Wendy Wu Tours proudly presents this mystical journey, following in the great explorer’s path. Starting in the capital city of Beijing we travel to Xian, the ancient capital at the Eastern end of the Silk Road. Days 1-4: UK - Beijing Fly to Beijing and meet our Tour Captain. A welcome dinner of local ‘Peking’ cuisine awaits.Take a walk on the Great Wall and visit the unique Temple of Heaven. In the evening be entertained by a Chinese Acrobatic Show. The following day visit Tiananmen Square, the world’s largest public square, the treasure filled Forbidden City, the largest and best preserved collection of ancient buildings in China and the stunning Summer Palace. Afterwards board our overnight sleeper train to the former Imperial Capital of Xian. Days 5-7: Xian Upon arrival, transfer to our hotel before visiting the Little Wild Goose Pagoda and enjoying sumptuous Shui Jiao cuisine. Be amazed by the Terracotta Warriors, created over 2000 years ago to accompany Emperor Qin Shihuang into the afterlife. Afterwards explore the Ancient City Wall and witness a performance of Tang Dynasty dancing. Next morning see the priceless relics in the Shaanxi Museum and explore the Muslim Quarter. Finally, catch the overnight sleeper train to Lanzhou. Days 8-9: Lanzhou Arrive in Lanzhou and transfer to our hotel. Wander in the Park by the Yellow River before visiting the White Temple. In the evening we sample the local ‘Hand Stretched Noodles’.Tomorrow transfer by speedboat on Liujiaxia Lake to see the renowned Bingling Caves where Silk Road travellers have carved their marks for centuries. Days 10-11: Xiahe We travel by road through the Jishi Mountain Pass to Xiahe, known as ‘Little Tibet’. Next morning visit the mystical Labrang Monastery of the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect. In the afternoon tour the Sangke Grasslands where wild flowers flourish. Days 12-14: Jiayuguan Return to Lanzhou and board an overnight train to Jiayuguan arriving at midday the following day.There we visit Jiayu Fortress, set between the Red and Black Mountains, and then walk along the Western end of the Great Wall. Next day we travel by train to beautiful Dunhuang. Days 15-16: Dunhuang We visit the world famous Buddhist murals and sculptures of the evocative Mogao Grottoes. Next day tour Crescent Moon Spring and the ‘Singing Sand Dunes’, where you will have fantastic photo opportunities. That evening we will board our sleeper train to the Oasis city of Turpan. Adventurous Tours Days 17-18: Turpan Arrive in the morning and visit the ancient city of Jiaohe and view the ‘Flaming Mountains’.Tomorrow we see the Emin Minaret, visit local homes at Grape Valley and marvel at the 2000 year old Kerez Irrigation Canals. Days 19-22: Kurla/Kuqa/Aksu/Kashgar Over the next 4 days we travel along the original Silk Route, viewing ruins and sights largely unvisited by tourists.Travel to Kurla and see the ‘Iron Fortress’. Next day we visit the ruins of Subashi, arriving in Kuqa where we will visit the old city wall. We visit the Kyzil Thousand Buddha Caves on our journey to Aksu. Arrive in fabled Kashgar the following day and transfer to our hotel. The Silk Road/Kashgar Almost two thousand years before being named ‘The Silk Road’, the great East-West trade route, which extends 5,000 miles, was first travelled by emissaries of the Han Dynasty.As the centuries passed, many caravans set out from the ancient capital of Chang’an (modern Xian) and ventured westwards along a route that took them to Kashgar and then over the Pamir Mountains to Central Asia and finally to Rome. Although silk played only a small part in the trade that was carried along the way, the name Silk Road has become synonymous with the many amazing images, cultures and diverse peoples encountered along its path. Days 23-24: Kashgar Known as the ‘Casablanca’ of China, our tour here includes the National Minorities Museum,The Abakh Hoja Tomb and the Id Kah Mosque. Next day we visit the world’s largest Sunday bazaar and the livestock market, where people of many different races and cultures gather. Later fly to Urumqi. Days 25-26: Urumqi We will take an excursion to the marvellous Heavenly Lake enjoying breathtaking views of the crystal clear water. Later sample a traditional meal of Uyghur Lamb Skewers. Next day we visit the Xinjiang Region Museum, home to 1,000 year-old mummies. Finally we fly back to Beijing for our final night.
