Carraribaohill, the highest moiintain in Ireland. It<br />

descends on the Killarney side by a curved edge,<br />

which the spectator catches in profile, all jagged and<br />

serrated with great masses of rock projecting like<br />

teeth. Tuathail [thoohil] means left-handed, and is<br />

applied to anything reversed from its proper direc-<br />

tion; carrdn is a reaping hook; and Carrantuohill is<br />

"the reversed reaping hook," because the teeth are<br />

on a convex instead of a concave edge.<br />

Carrick; a rock, <strong>Irish</strong> mr/-a?y [carrig].<br />

Carrickbeg; little rock.<br />

CarrickdufF; black rock.<br />

Carrickfergus; Fergus's rock.<br />

Carrickmore ; great rock.<br />

Carrick-cm-Shannon. Carrick is here a corruption of<br />

earra, a weir; and the place took its name from an<br />

ancient weir across the Shannon. Its old anglicised<br />

name was Carriekdrumrusk, properly Carra-Drumrusk,<br />

the weir of Drurarusk.<br />

Carrick- on- Suir ; the rock of the Suir ; from a large rock<br />

in the bed of the river.<br />

Carrig; a rock, the same as Carrick.<br />

Carrigafoyle on the Shannon, near Ballylongford; Carraig-a'-phoill,<br />

[CarrigahowlyJ, the rock of the fleet; and<br />

it took its name from the rock which rises over the<br />

k^ where the fleets anchored. The <strong>local</strong> pronunciation<br />

of the <strong>Irish</strong> name is CarrigahoUy, from which<br />

the present name is derived. Another place of the<br />

same name which preserves the correct pronunciation,<br />

is Carrigahowly on Newport bay in Mayo, the castk<br />

of the celebrated Grace O'Malley.<br />
